Weird Game, but very enjoyable!!

This Game is like super weird and totally Japanese style, but very addicting, your a little green guy whose a prince and the point of the game is to collect as many items as possible to creat stars in the Galaxy, from a little eraser to a big building. This game is really challenging bc it's base on time limits to throughout the game your rushing to finish before the time runs out. The music is addicting and gameplay. The only issue I have is the controls, they are a bit hard to get use to, other than that I highly recommend this game to any kid and adult.Read full review...

Fun for everyone

At heart this is a simple game. Roll up all kinds of stuff on a sticky ball which will then be compacted to make a star. It sounds simple but is endlessly entertaining due to the catchy music and variety of things you can encounter.

I originally saw a demo version of this game being played at a convention and liked it so much that I bought a Playstation 2 in order to play it. My retired 65 year old mother loves this game just as much. The controls are very simple and easy to master for young and old alike. No fancy button combos required, which makes it ideal for people who have never played video games before, or only played strategy or puzzle type games.

The game play is sufficiently deep to keep more serious gamers interested as well. There's special presents hidden in all the levels. There's also a feature called "collections" where it shows you how many of each item you've collected and from where. Filling out the whole collection to get all the items will take multiple plays through the game. You can beat the levels without getting the presents or finishing a collection, but serious gamers will want to try for full completion.

The levels can be beaten in various ways. If you just barely complete the objective, it will just unlock the next level. If you achieve spectacular success the end-level animation will be different and in many cases may unlock a bonus 'hidden' level.

You can roll up all kinds of strange thing during the course of the game. This ranges from normal household items like pens and telephones to more exotic things like people in rabbit suits, sumo wrestlers, and the Loch Ness Monster. Animals and people will try to run away from you so you have to chase them down.

One of the great features in the game is you can't die. At worst you'll fail to complete a level. It's also a fun game to watch being played, so can be a good game to introduce a non-gamer to video games.

The music is insanely catchy. You will end up humming the theme music. It is relentlessly happy. If you had a bad day at work, half an hour of Katamari Damarcy will make things better.

The one down side is that the two player mode gets repetative very quickly and the split screen is a bit confusing. If you have several folks who'd like to play, it's easier to just switch off who's playing single player mode and let the others watch. Most levels are under ten minutes and are entertaining to watch, so even kids shouldn't get too restless if they have to share.

Pretty fun game, but the sequels are better

I first encountered this game in 2004 when someone was playing it at my school's union, and and stood and watched for a good 30 minutes. Then more recently, I saw a used copy of the PSP version for sale in a store for a cheap price, so I picked it up. I played that one for weeks on the bed before going to sleep till I got nearly all 100%.

Then I picked up We Love Katamari, and played that one a bit, though not as much, since I don't touch the PS2 very often. But it's very fun still, and there are some very interesting levels in there.

So I went ahead and bought the first game of the series, Katamari Damacy, and popped it in to try it. It has pretty quirky story scenes in between levels, which are very amusing if you're into the Katamari Damacy type of humor. Unfortunately, what I noticed in the first few levels is that it's all long and feels like everything's repeated, which I guess the later games handled better.

The King destroyed the stars, so the Prince gets a super sticky ball called a Katamari and goes to different countries on Earth to roll up stuff to make new stars. But the annoying thing is, moving countries doesn't seem to change much in the room at all. Out of the first 6 stars you roll up, most of the content is the same.

You can also roll constellations though, which are significantly different from each other, such as having to roll up as many fish as you can to make Pisces, or rolling up as many crabs as you can to make Cancer, which were very entertaining.

All in all, this is not a bad game, but it's nowhere near as good as its sequel, "We Love Katamari", or the PSP version, "Me and My Katamari".

Simplistic fun that has great play-ability.

A classic game that really needs a remaster or re-released on modern consoles. The ps2 version is the most true and pure way of playing however. Simplistic controls that are easy pilot combined with great gameplay make it a ps2 gem. Recommend to gamers of any level.Read full review...

The most fun I've had in a while!

This entire series is superb, if you're new to Katamari Damacy, there's no better place to start than this game as it's the first in the franchise. The gameplay is addictive and you'll find yourself going back and playing it again after completing it. Fun, strange, and quite challenging at times. One of my top 10 favorite game franchises of all time for sure!Read full review...

A little strange

In this game you roll around this ball that everthing sticks to - the bigger you get the bigger the things you can pick up. You start with push pins and eventually work your way up to elephants and buildings. It is a very simple game and great if you have kids around but when you try to explain it to people you may sound like an idiot. Imagine trying to explain tetris to someone. Although it says it's a two player game that is only one small feature of this game and the head to head competition is very boring (you only have one "arena" space to roll around in and a finite number of objects). The music can be quite catchy.Read full review...

A truly timeless game!

Katamari is one of the most outrageously addictive games that I high recommend to anyone with a PS2. Though it can be a struggle to control at the worst of times, it's a delight when you finally get to the size of rolling up houses and landmasses. And no matter what, the music never fails to cheer me upRead full review...

Laaaa la la la la la la la la Katamari Damacy!!!

Great game, especially if you're in the middle of "expanding your mind" (you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about within the first 15 sec's of the intro video). At first, I thought this was the dumbest game I had ever heard of (I mean, honestly, how is rolling up stuff entertaining), but after actually playing it, I was surprised at how much fun, and addicting, this game is.

I recently picked up another copy off eBay to revisit a little bit of my past, and quickly remembered why I like this game:

-The game-play is solid
-The story line is very funny
-I thought music was a little "simple" at first, but soon realized how catchy/addicting it can be (I've found myself humming the songs while stuck in traffic, wishing I could "roll" the cars out of my way)

All in all, I recommend everyone pick up a copy just to check it out. I can almost guarantee that you've never seen a game like this before. And at only $9 (last time I checked), what do you have to loose.

BTW, the only reason I gave it a 4 (or Good) instead of a 5 (or Excellent) was because of the fact that I thought the second Katamari Damacy was even better (I feel like they improved the control, making it easier to move around).

Love At First Play - Funny, Quirky, Charming - Love It!

It's hard to put a finger on exactly why this game caught my fancy. The graphics are fun, giving you a whole new appreciation of everyday items, like paperclips, sticks of gum, and even crazy things like teakettles and earth moving equipment. Who would ever have thought the same game would have all these items?

The premise is crazy - the stars have been "put out" from the night sky (in the Japanese version, the King of All Cosmos got drunk and went on a bender, but in the politically correct US version (), he just has a bad night. He gives his son, the tiny Prince, the job of repopulating the sky, from the smallest speck of a star to the moon, with bonus levels of the various constellations.

There are cut scenes of a Japanese family who's father is an astronaut that are very funny and silly, because nobody seems to notice the craziness going on around them other than the son (who's very quiet).

You start small, rolling up objects on the "katamari" (basically meaning blob) like tacks and paperclips and sticks of gum, working your way up to bigger and bigger objects to make a katamari big enough to satisfy the King's requirement for that particular star. The King is very demanding, and woe betide you if your star isn't big enough ... what a mean guy! Eventually the objects you roll up get bigger and bigger and you go from the table to the house to the lawn and eventually into town in search of bigger objects for your katamari until you're rolling up elephants, octopi, and carnivals.

It's funny and surreal, and the bonus constellation rounds are based on picking up objects that relate to the particular one you're working on (for example ... you're judged by how many crabs you roll into your crab nebula ... and they're all over! ... maidens for Virgo ... it's all so funny!). The biggest challenge is the moon, and good luck to you in the time you're allowed to roll up that much stuff!

The things you can explore in the game are fun, too ... like an inventory of the objects you've picked up and the places you've been rolling stuff up. It really makes you aware of what a consumer oriented society we live in in some ways.

The music is catchy, and the game is easy to learn, though a challenge to master ... but isn't anything worth mastering fun?

I highly recommend it, even as a party game ... even the person who claims they're the most inept at video games will have fun trying to make a star.

So why are you still reading this? Go find a copy and play!

If you found this helpful ... give me a vote! Thank you!

Addictive, quirky, funny, and very very Japanese.

I'm sorry to say that I missed this game when it originally came out. It stands up well to the test of time, a lot of the time that I was playing, I was so lost in the game that I didn't even realize that I was playing a 10 year old game. The game is relatively short when it comes to the main story. I was able to beat it in about 5 hours just playing the main "make a star" missions and skipping the others. There is however a huge replay value. After beating each level, the player has the option to play it again and with the sheer size of each level, it's very fun to replay the levels and see what you missed last time. If you get a high enough score on a level you have the option to go back and play it again without the time limit which is great if you really want to see everything. The other side missions are great fun. Unlike the main missions, the side missions focuses on certain tasks such as collecting a lot of a certain specific thing, rather than just making your Katamari bigger. The game is fun and very quirky. It's easy to get hooked. I started playing and literally could not quit playing until I beat it. If you like weird games or just want to try something new and addictive like you've never experienced before, this game is for you.Read full review...
