Love NXT!

I grew up with Legos and my two young sons have as well. This is our next step to enhancing the endless creative opportunities that come with Legos, and it is fun to be learning it together. The set comes with everything you need to make numerous models for which instructions are included on the software CD. The components themselves are Lego Technics that can be used in conjunctions with any existing Legos you already have. Note that you do need to have a reasonably up to date PC or Mac to use the software and program the NXT brick (see system requirements if you are unsure). Only drawback is that, unlike all the other Legos we own, this one does require 6 AA batteries - rechargeables will be in our future.Read full review...

My Son loves this.

He uses the same software at school so already knew how to use it and is still not bored with it. So many possibilities and helps him tremendously with his UIL Robotics. The best toy I ever invested in for my kids-this a must for middleschool.

cant say enough good things about this. Kids can learn math as degrees, rotations, conversions. Also allows kids to apply their math skills. They see a reason for all those hours spent on the drudgery of math problems they encounter at school. Kids encounter mechanical devices such as linkages, gears, etc.., something they wouldnt see till later in life. This also involves quite a bit of spatial reasoning to tinker your creation. Also teaches that the computer is a tool not just entertainment. Teaches kids that failure is okay but satisfaction is achieved when they problem solve to improve their design. You can see the light bulb go on when they start to brainstorm. After a long day at school many kids come in with such enthusiasm. They don't realize they are learning. This is a great stepping stone for many to do more advanced programming and robot design. I could go on and on. But beware Parents must involve themselves. This is not a toy that young kids can just play by themselves. I got my daughter so involved by bringing it to her friends in an after school program. Great product as an entry into mechanical, software and product design.

I am an engineer by career and have a 5 1/2 year old daughter who I want to expose to the benefits of engineering (i.e. math, mechanical and programming engineering, etc.) Lego Mindstorm kits seem to be a great way to ease a child into those kinds of topics. I program for a living and its nice that you can create something with a 10,000 foot view of things instead of having to dig through details that derail a child's attention. Its a good and simple kit with room to grow to a much more involved kit if you decide to take it that way. There are several free high end programming packages out there if you decide to take your programming to a higher level and there are a lot of after market kits on eBay and elsewhere that can also cheaply expand the abilities of the kit. My daughter has already created a few robotics projects and I am easing her into the programming sides of things. Being a graphical programming language,it gives a good start into the ins and outs of programming. I would definitely purchase this kit again. Its by far the best entry into programming, mechanical and electrical engineering and critical thinking.Read full review...

Lego Mindstorm

I can't think of a better learning tool for the 21st century then hooking a 10 year old into this 'system' of playing (its really hard core learning) with robots. I don't have enough energy to type all of the good attributes..I'll sum it up with the look I saw on my daughter face as the robot didn't behave as expected on the floor and she picked it up brought it over the laptop and proceeded to put here hands on her temple as she spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how 'the car went in the ditch'.... It was awesome....I'm reading as fast as I can to stay ahead of her. We already have our first challenge set up with 2 other families...

Every kid should have one of these, we wouldn't be falling in back of the rest or the world in math and science..This is how the stimulus $ should be spent if we really want an investment in the future...Read full review...

Ain't Nothing Like the Old School!

Even though the Lego Ev3 kit is more advance and easier to program, I still like to teach my son the Old school methods of programming. 😊
