More than I expected

This is a great phone. It looks just like new. It has a lot of helpful apps and you can access the internet through Wi-Fi I wasn't expecting that. I love the sliding screen and awesome keyboard. YouTube videos look pretty good. Its a small phone with a lot of potential. Love it so far!Read full review...

I'm sure this was once a really great phone

Unfortunately, times and technology change and because this is a older phone, it just isn't up to today's standards.

Although it's an Android, I'm thinking it's one of the first generations so although you can access Google Play and all the aps, almost none of them are compatible with this phone which makes functionality tough.

However, if you're OK with that, and can charge the phone every 2 hours or so, the call quality is good and I love the slide out qwerty keyboard.

Goodbye Windows Mobile, Hello Android!

This phone was a replacement for my Samsung Omnia Windows Mobile Phone. I was looking for a device that was more stable and had a keyboard.

While it maybe a little slower then other Andriod phones, navigation between menus and screens are very easy. Ease of adding on widgets and short cuts are very nice. Since I had an account with Google and a Windows phone designed to sync information with the account, all I had to do is type in my username and password into my Android phone and all my contacts and calendar events were up and running in seconds. I also was able to find Widgets that matched the Today screen on my old Windows phone. The widgets are a lot easier to navigate without bumping the wrong thing on the screen. ThinkFree Office comes standard with the LG Ally, which was another selling point. It is a very stable Word & Excel viewer and editor.

A couple things are minor dislikes. Built in memory is only about 100mb. However that can be resolved with a MicroSD card. Some of the navigation keys are a little too close on the slider keyboard, so it is easy to exit from what you were doing. Also, it seems certain phone setting are not available, for example, lock settings, or different sound profiles. I'm sure there is an app out there to fix that issue. The processor is only 600mhz, so if your looking for multimedia performance, then you might be disappointed. For me, it works GREAT for a work phone. There are a lot of organizing apps out there to match most the features I expect from a PDA/Smart Phone.

I will never go back to a Windows phone again. LG makes a well rounded Android phone, and I hope they continue!

Easy to use - But ....

The reason I purchased this phone was because I had one and lost it. The phone I purchased is not the same quality as the first phone I had. Not sure if LG started to manufacture them differently, this one is just a lemon or if I just happened to purchase a knock off Lg phone. Battery life on initial phone was not great but lucky to get through a day with out phone battery dying now. If you use internet just plug it in because the battery will not stand up to internet use at all. Sometimes the screen will not conform from vertical to horizontal. A few times it has just frozen and I've had to take the battery out to reset. The charger I received with this phone was a joke. It lasted only 2 weeks before it died. Luckily I had the charger from the previous Ally I had and am currently using it. I love the larger screen and ease of the slide out texting keyboard. The way the buttons are raised and not totally flat help with quicker texting. I purchased a second LG Ally because I really liked the first one I had. Not sure why this one not up to par.Read full review...

Great phone if you don't mind rolling up your sleeves and flashing Velocity

My wife wanted a slide-out keyboard. I would have liked a slightly smaller form-factor...but she keeps it in her purse, not pocket...so it isn't a big deal. Barely larger than her ENV3 it replaced.<br>
It DID run a little slow until I flashed Velocity 1.1 on it. Google it, it isn't that bad.
-Rooted with super one click
-Installed Clockwork Rom Manager
-Flashed recovery
-Put Velocity 1.1 on micro sd card (zip file)
-Rebooted into recovery, cleared all user data + delvik cache
-Flashed Velocity 1.1

...this thing runs like a dream and the wifi seems to drain my battery way slower than my OG Droid. I did use the Velocity Toolkit to overclock a little (825mHz, from 600ish stock).

Only con, can't seem to get Flash working on it. Still trying...has to do with the processor type (limitations), it seems. No huge deal, though.

LG Ally (Verizon): Great phone for the cost, but leaves you wanting more.

Today I am going to review the LG Ally for Verizon. I have been using this phone for almost a year. I am still on the original new one that I got and have not had to file a claim for a refurbished or new on yet.

The Price: I paid $99 for my upgrade, however the price has come down lately to about $49 from my knowledge.

The Good: The phone itself is built pretty well. Keys are places where they should be for easy functioning. The keyboard definitely is one of the better ones on the market, the keys are spaced far enough apart to where you aren't stumbling for letters like the droid. The screen is nice and bright and it comes with a lot of programs and of course the Android market. Battery life is average however you are not going to want to put advanced task killer on it if you have Android 2.2. I have dropped the phone serveral times with the rubber case on it and so far it has been solid and still working. However this is really where all the great features stop...

The Bad: The internal memory runs out all the time, once you start to put programs on it, be prepared for reboots because it will run out of memory. The SD Card is small only 4GB vs. the Droids 16GB, however that never really caused an issue for me. The camera can be very slow at times, but pictures are average. The processor on this phone is pretty slow at times, there is definitely a difference from the Droid. Reception is average at best and the screen isn't the most sensative.

Conclusion: Overall this phone is decent for the price, however it is pretty much a over priced texting phone with the slide out keyboard. If all you plan on doing is light internet use, text messaging, and calling this phone will do the trick. Once you get into using programs that are demanding on processing power this phone will not be able to keep up. Save the money and put it into a better phone, you will out grow this phone quickly.

Great for a beginner.

Since this is my first Android phone, I am not the best person to review this phone. Maybe if I had something to compare it with, but anyway here goes.

Loved the keyboard and the screen quality.
Hated battery life and memory until I rooted the phone.

This phone has to be one of the reasons that rooting is so popular. Now I can store what I need not what Verizon gives me. The phone is still short of memory compared to the new phones but it is good enough for me so far.

All in all, I think the phone is great. Please keep in mind, this is my first Android and I have only had it three months.

Good features, subpar reception.

I purchased this for my girlfriend and it works well. She likes the slide out keyboard. Youtube videos look nice. Have not tried the camera as of yet. but the call quality is good. reception is low compared to other phones she has had. Not as good as our old razor v3a phones. touch screen seems to work well also. Texting is good. not any complaints other than her 1st touchscreen, took a while to get used to it. Would be really good if not for the reception. When you have signal call quality is clear but reception just ruins what could have been a really good phone.Read full review...

Good phone, missing the greatness of today's Android phones (speed & flash)

An Android Froyo 2.2 phone that doesn't play flash because its processor is too weak. Bummer, because its one of Android's selling points. The phone feels solid, and a bit on the heavy side for today's phone, but by no means not uncomfortable. Keyboard is excellent. Reception is good, call quality is good, and 3G work good. Very simple and easy to use design and interfaced. Battery doesn't last too long though, half a day with average use. Its a bit slow. Taking awhile to open up apps. The phone is made of a soft plastic, and can easily be dented. Overall, a nice entry Android phone with a full QWERTY keyboard. For the same price, I should had gotten a Motorola Droid.Read full review...

Fun phone that I highly recommend!!!

I really enjoy all the features of this phone. It is fun to play around with different settings. It was kind of hard to get used to the messaging format but once i got the hang of it i liked it. I wish the batter life was longer but it is a small sacrifice i made for a great phone. It is fun to personalize it and find apps. it is easy to use. Only took me a day to get used to the messaging. I would 100% recommend this to a friend.Read full review...

Love the phone but can no longer be activated on Verizon network

I love the set up of the phone and the keyboard. It's all really easy to use. I wish they would make a newer version! Verizon will no longer activate anything under a 4G, which this is 3G. It's also older so I was unable to download or look much up. I basically talk & text so it was great for me! Read full review...
