Lila Downs - La Sandunga

La Sandunga is a wonderful blend of 1920's/30's traditional Mexican style music (Cancion Mixteca, La Pinotepa) and contemporary low level lounge jazz.
This woman Lila(pronounced Leela)has a masterful control of her vocal cords,
with the ability to sound like a 75 year old recording from the days of the
Revolution or a mesmerizing style of a New York supper club singer. All tracks blend together so well on this CD, I highly recommend it for a variety
of listeners of Latino music.
While this is not Norteno or Tejana, Lila's own unique style and ability to change from seemingly early and simple arrangements to silky and smooth treatments of popular Mexican ballads puts her in a class by herself. I have heard many other Mexican female singers do one or the other, but none who can
jump from one style to another like she can.
I have three of her CD's with this being the latest. I can't say this is my favorite, but I can't stop playing it. And, like her others, I doubt I will grow tired of it any time soon.
I don't speak much Spanish. So, I've asked a few of my Hispanic friends just what La Sandunga (possibly my favorite track on the CD) is. No one can tell me. Anyone out there who can help with that?Read full review...

Lila comes of age on this modern-day classic.

This album was the one that officially put Lila on the world stage and set off what would end up becoming one of the most distinguished Latin music legacies in recent memory.
