Leica V Lux 1 Impressive

The Leica V Lux 1 is one very impressive digital camera. For the beginner or more advanced it takes phenomenal photos especially if you are one of those who prefer distant closeup shots using a great zoom lense. I have owned its counterpart the Panasonic fz30 for several years until i finally got a handle on how to use all of its functions. Then I decided it was time to upgrade to the VLux 1 if for the red dot prestige alone if nothing else since you can pick these up so cheap it is worth it. Remember the Vlux 1 sports a larger 1 1/8 ccd sensor than the other VLux cameras and I believe it actually takes better photos because of this. Hope this helps.........Read full review...

For the Price, an exceptional camera for family and general photography.

While it is nice to have a camera that is capable of anything, when it gets down to it most of us rarely use the full range of features available on modern digital cameras. If you shoot a lot of sports, really need different lenses for different situations, then this is not the camera for you. If you need 24 megapixels because you blow your shots up wall size then get a camera that will do that. I wanted a camera to take very good quality photos of my family and scenery, as well as being able to play a little now and then. The V-lux is an excellent camera for that.

It is not the latest model, but has enough megapixels (10.1) coupled with a great lens and good software plus full manual features. It is much like purchasing a 10 year old supercar compared to a modern Hyundai. they have similar features, but the quality of the older car that has depreciated by a few hundred thousand dollars is still there. In the end despite being a Lumix cooperation (the equivalent Lumix is also a fine camera), this is still a Leica, and it does not disappoint. I have owned several Leica cameras, including a D-Lux 3 I currently own. I had long wanted a V-lux 1 for the manual zoom, the Leica lens quality and the smaller format than a DSLR. I searched for some time to find a good example at a reasonable price, and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

You cannot compare this camera to modern DSLR cameras. the size is different, the lens is not interchangeable and the frame rate is not comparable. However, for the price I paid (between $300 and $400AUD), you simply cannot beat it for versatility and value.

The lens is what you pay for, and the V-Lux 1 does not disappoint. A professional photographer once gave me the advice of buying the best glass I could afford and the Leica lens takes fantastic shots in all lights. Adding a larger flash increases the range. The manual zoom works really well, making it quick to focus and shoot in a variety of situations. The sensor is big, and really does a great job in challenging lights and situations. The option of RAW when I want to be a bit creative is good, as are the impressive variety of shooting modes, and the ability to go full manual. The multi angle screen is useful, though not as sharp as some of the newer screens, and the ability to view the screen through the viewfinder is great for outdoors in bright sunlight.

Compared to modern 4/3 cameras, and older DSLR units, the V-lux 1 is exceptional value, and is less bulky, easy to use and makes the photographer look good. While later Leica models have greater zoom depth, the 12x is plenty for family shots and outdoor uses, while the lens quality makes macro shots really stand out. You can really zoom in on kids faces and get great shots, and the optical zoom beats digital zoom every day of the week. The video, while not full HD, is good quality and the ability to manually zoom while filming is great while tracking kids movements and gaining perspective.

For the price one can get these cameras at now, they represent exceptional value. The features are comparable with much more expensive cameras, the quality of Leica products is fantastic, and the results are outstanding. For family photography you can't go past it. It doesn't do everything, but what it does it does extremely well.

It is the best and well worth the price! I have 24 cameraa!

I'm enjoying it!!!! Nothing better!!!
The Leica V-LUX 1 is an expensive camera that I got a super deal on through ebay. It is worth every penny! I've been learning about it as I take experimental photos with it. I got it so I can take quality photos on an up-coming trip! So far, it will do everything I want it too do and more. To be blunt, this camera is beyond my present capabilities I normally travel with many cameras and this one will cover all! No more bulky lenses to carry, thank God! However, I do back it up with a Leica V-LUX 30!!
Yes! I like it!

Co-developed with Panasonic

The Leica V-LUX 1 was co-developed with Panasonic and except for cosmetics and proprietary firmware, it is the same camera as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50. I have the latter and it is one of my favorite digital cameras. It is a little on the heavy side but solidly built and a solid performer.Read full review...
