Lila Says

Flickfilosopher, "It's sort of Romeo & Juliet, but with the same kind of urgency the story of star-crossed lovers must have had for the Bard's first audience: Chimo (Mohammed Khouas) is a poor minority lad in Marseilles; Lila (Vahina Giocante) is an adolescent goddess, blonde and teasing; their teenage romance, alive with raw, unabashed lust, transforms both of them in ways neither expects. The fact that he is Muslim lends the film a new desperation in the wake of the horrendous rioting that has spread through France recently -- there's a surprising and unplanned soupcon of poignancy that makes the film feel almost impossibly modern, like we haven't yet caught up to its world yet. But the beautiful performances by its young stars, which sing with aching pain and desire, are classic: truly, this story is universal and timeless." Lila holds a secret that makes you realize the world is not as we always perceive it to be.Read full review...

Clever story line

The movie is set in France. It is about a Polish teenage girl taking a liking to an Arab teenage boy. Initially, the girl's dialogue sounds rather sudden and risque but actually once the whole movie is understood, there is a good reason for why she carried on like she did towards the boy. She liked him and for one reason, she knew immediately that he was capable of handling her secrets. She knew she had found someone who accepted her and would give her love. The way the scriptwriter goes about to tell such a tale is interesting.
The filming of the two main characters was very interesting as well.

Good but...

A decent film, but not nearly as good as the book it's based on ('Lila Says'/'Lila Dit Ca' by Chimo). The book, as is often the case, is infinitely deeper, stronger and more beautiful than the movie (far more disturbing and explicit as well).Read full review...
