Accurate, Realistic Gondola of the Modern Diesel Era
Measuring about 10.5 inches in length (not counting the coupler shanks), this gondola can be accurately considered to be 1:48 O scale. It is, in fact, representative of the Standard-O line of very-near-scale-size models introduced by Modern-Era Lionel. While the end ladders and grab irons are molded onto the body, they are in deep relief and look quite believable. There is, of course, a separately-applied brake wheel at one end, and realistic stirrup steps hang from the four corners. The diecast sprung trucks are also a fine, realistic detail. The molded coal load seems a bit far-fetched since, in contemporary railroading, coal is typically shipped in hoppers or "coal porters" rather than gondolas, but the load is easily removable and can be replaced with loads more typically found in gondolas. The RailGon experiment by modern railroads is perhaps not as well known as the RailBox experiment but is nonetheless completely prototypical and historically accurate. This car will look perfectly at home on any O gauge layout featuring modern Diesel locomotive power. Of interest to collectors, this gondola was not available through hobby shops but only by direct sale from Lionel itself.Read full review...
