good gps for keeping in the car for when you get lost

i bought this gps along with a screen protector and vent mount to keep in my car. i travel in and out of the city and distant suburbs on an as need basis for business purposed and would always have to google map directions only to have reroute because of construction of because i missed an exit or whatnot. so having a gps unit became a necessity.

as far as the unit goes, it does its job well. i have had to reroute myself several times and its helped me to find my way. one good thing about it is that it will zoom in on intersections as you approach it so that you know which way to go especially if it involves very busy intersections with several roads and quick turns that occur one after another.

the screen is clear and bright. very responsive touch screen. overall it is a basic unit with solid construction featuring a matte black housing. it doesnt have as many features as my mom and dads tom tom which is loaded with every feature you could possibly want ;) but for more money.

the bad: sometimes if i turn off the unit in one neighborhood and turn it back on in another it will take forever for it to realize where i am... very slow ability to connect with a satellite. sometimes it tells me to turn onto one way streets in the wrong direction. rerouting is a little slow at times.

for the money, its a good gps unit although slow and clumsy.

Merry Christmas with a Roadmate

On a trip last fall to the lower southeastern coast of SC a friend who was traveling with us had a personal GPS. It was extremely helpful in finding our way around the resort area we were visiting. Recalling the experience I thought a GPS would be a nice Christmas gift for my wife. Being a regular Ebay shopper I went to the site to look for one. Among the Tom Toms, Garmins and others I felt the Magellan models offered the same capabilities at reasonable prices. I found a 1430 I liked and bid on it. It was new (I don't buy used Christmas gifts), and contained all the accesories I wanted. The only downside was that it didn't come in the original packaging (box). That was OK because she flew past the packaging in pursuit of the goodies. It worked great on a recent trip and provides a bit of humor when the "voice" tells you to make a u-turn at the next opportunity since you missed your turn.Read full review...

Now I don't get lost anymore

When I received the Roadmate, the first thing I did was charge it up, plug it in and without even reading the instructions, I was able to use it right away. Nice large colorful screen & the text to speech works very well. You can adjust the volume to fit your hearing . You don't have to look at the screen to see where you have to go. It tells you that the turn is coming up and it dings when it's time to make the turn. It works beautiful. It even has a home button, so that if you are lost somewhere, just push that tab and it will lead you out and take you home. The price was good too. It also has free traffic updates for a year. Now, I can't get along without it. Thanks Magellan and I got it for a very low price that beat all the stores. Only on E-Bay! The Magellan also tells you where points of interest are, banks, gas stations, museums, national parks, etc. I love it. We're glad we got it!!!!!Read full review...

Great GPS Unit

My wife and I really like this GPS unit. It works great. Easy to use. Easy to understand and has some great features. My wife is a realtor and the ability to input several addresses and have it route from one to the next makes showing homes very easy. It also finds the addresses really quickly and has logic that quickly suggest likely matches that keeps you from having to type in the whole word each time. I have an old Garmin GPS that I paid $500 for and this one is far superior.Read full review...

Magellan roadmate 1430

The 1430 was purchased as an upgrade to an older Magellan which will now be used in the second car. As with all Magellans I have dealt with, this one is easy to use and the programing is user friendly.

The 1430 has a larger screen which makes it much easier to see and to work with. The 1430 includes real time traffic updates which would be useful for those living in the metropolitan areas where this is available, but for me it is not useless as I live in a rural area and do not travel to these urban areas.

I would rate this unit very highly in all regards that I have used.

Roadmate easy to use, exactly what I was looking for....

I purchased theis product because I drive the van for the church and take our children and youth on trips. This will make it easier for us to find our way without printing pages of directions. We can find places to eat in the area and will be able to get back to the place we are staying without stopping at a convenience store to ask for directions. The roadmate is very easy to operate and does exactly what I need it to do.Read full review...

Megellan Roadmate 1430

I have a garmin nuvi 650 that I use and wanted to try a different brand.
Everything seems to work like a normal gps.
One thing that disappointed me was that when I looked up a certain address, it made me make a u-turn and drive an extra 1/2 mile or so when all it had to do was tell me that the destination is to my left. Basically, the gps made me pass the destination, go down a 1/4 mile to an intersection, made me make a u-turn and then tell me that the destination is to my right. How weird.Read full review...

Great GPS for the Money

Easy to use and program for the novice. No problem with finding destinations or locating points of interest. My only fault is that the update maps are costly and if the roads are new in the area, you can miss them. The GPS is fine, easy to see, hear and mount to the windshield. Nothing fancy, just practical.Read full review...
