Basically Same Thing As 2K6

When I bought MLB 2K6 last year (I bought it for XBOX), I thought this was different than the MVP games I had played in the past. Depending on the pitcher, it was sometimes hard to throw a strike at times, especially if they had poor composure. Because when you aim and you're in a jam, the cursor would go all over the place. So it was just guess and hope you get one over the plate sometimes. But sometimes they kind of overdid that, too. They would constantly have this going in extra inning games when noone was on base. There's not too much pressure in extra inning games with noone on base unless a big name hitter comes up, but when a soft hitting slow infielder came up, you'd think the pitcher was facing Babe Ruth. But for the most part I thought this part of the game was cool. You didn't have too many games last forever, just because of this. And the batting was different from the older MVP games, it emulated the Tiger Woods video games, with the pulling back of the swingstick. To try to hit a basehit, you let go though; and to try to hit a dinger, you swing just like on the Tiger games (instead of just hitting X on the MVP games). I kind of liked this, although it was much harder to check your swing. Overall, I don't know if I liked the game any better, but it was different. They didn't copycat what had worked for MVP for so many years, so it was kind of refreshing to have an original new configuration for gameplay.

That was 2K6. 2K7 is pretty much the exact same thing except with updated rosters. And of course, no Barry Bonds. I didn't spend a lot of time trying to figure out what I thought his stats should be, because if you play the franchise mode, he'd probably retire after the first year anyway (I did spend the time on last year's game, he got hurt, spent a lot of time on the DL, and then retired at the end of the year, so I didn't want to go through that again). They just put in some putz with good numbers with a made up name and have him bat right handed, and I'm like OK, whatever. There are a lot of guys who aren't on the correct teams (they're just sitting in the free agent pool), so if you want to update even further, you can spend the time going to espn.com (to find out what teams they're on, like Shannon Stewart, I didn't know he was playing for the Oakland A's this year) and put them on the right teams or I believe you can just go to the MLB 2K7 website and download them, too (I would recommend that, it's murder trying to put everyone in yourself). But then again, as soon as you do this (still in franchise mode), the computer makes a bunch of trades, so they change teams throughout the season anyway.

I still like this game, but I wish they had done some things different. It doesn't seem like it's much different than last year's game. I think it's harder to hit homeruns (I immediately went to the Legend level) than on last year's game. My favorite team is the Twins, and I have a harder time hitting dingers than on last year's game, even though Morneau, Hunter, and Cuddyer (I hate his goofy swing on the game, the timing is messed up) all had better power numbers. One thing I don't like on this year's game is the baserunning compared to last year's game. It's too easy to do something goofy, and your runner just kind of stands around on third base sometimes just waiting to be tagged. Swing and a MISS!!!

I had high hopes for this franchise, figuring the competition it had with "The Show" would drive it's creators to make a pretty good game. Wow, was I wrong.

I haven't bought a game since MVP 2005. Not to say I haven't rented them, then returned them before they were due. Ever since MVP 2005 came out for the PS2 that is the benchmark from which all other baseball games are judged, in my eyes, and so far none have come close to the smooth, consistent gameplay offered by that game.

So I went against my own rule by buying this game before I got to try it, but since I got it for $15 new I said why not. It was about time to have updated rosters without having to edit them myself, after all. So I opened the game and popped it into the PS2.

The batting controls were strange to me at first, but I was intrigued by using the right stick to bat. After some trial-and-error I got the hang of it and it wasn't too hard. In fact, I thought it added a dimension of realism to the game as you had to follow the ball from the second the pitcher wound up. However, batting had its fair share of quirks. There would be times when I took what the game told me was a "perfect step" then a "perfect swing" on a waist-high changeup and foul it off into the stands. Also, there was one (1) inning in which I was robbed of a home run by a climbing Carl Crawford - TWICE! I haven't yelled at the TV so hard in my life.

The pitching was intriguing as you could put more "effort" into pitches when you had to rear back for the K. However, I found myself putting full effort onto almost every pitch (because if I didn't I would get hammered), kind of defeating the purpose of having the feature.

While batting and pitching were more or less fruitful, the fielding system was HORRENDOUS. Bad, terrible, and horrible are not strong enough adjectives to describe the fielding in this game. Let's start with line drives; I found that if I started to sprint off-angle to where the ball was going to land, directing the fielder to turn was nearly impossible, leading to a lot of frustration when I have plenty of time to catch it yet it still falls in for a hit. Then fly balls ... there were times when I brought my fielder into position to catch them and he would not turn to face the ball, instead checking out the patterns on the wall and letting the ball bounce in for hits. This would happen at least once per game. Frustrating at best.

That's not all about the fielding system, either. There is no power meter or any way to control how hurried the fielder is to throw the ball. This left it up to the game to decide, the last thing I would want at this point. I would catch the ball trailing away from first base, press circle to throw and the shortstop would react like he had all the time in the world to throw and in turn the runner would be safe! Also there were plays at the plate where my fielder would get the ball, and I would press and hold X - only for nothing to happen!

And then there were more glitches. The game would constantly freeze in between batters; the fielders would throw the ball but it would appear to remain stuck in the air; the announcers were slower than molasses and constantly flipped out about nothing; I would find baserunners trying to attempt a double on grounders; the list goes on and on and on.

Overall I don't think that this work from such a quality production team deserves a decent rating. At least they only charge $30 for the game, ands it's less on ebay.Read full review...

this game has very good graphics and is easy to play. I enjoy it and would give it a good rating. have played better, but have also played much much worse

Great game but like anything else you have to get use to using all the buttons
on the controller to max out on the game . Old guy like me would prefer to use
only the x o square and triangle buttons not the r1 l1 and the left and right

This game is a lot of fun, however the franchise mode is lacking in many areas, I would love to have more control over my minors. For a number 2 starter in the rotation this game is perfect, but MLB 07 The Show is definitely the starter.Read full review...
