Fun, Frustrating, and Memorable

Having played the original Metroid II: Return of Samus, this game is a faithful and imaginative remake of the original. The music in this game is absolutely excellent and very memorable, with a couple familiar tracks from Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. The controls are intuitive, forgiving, and keep decent pace with the player's inputs. The graphics and layout are very nice, with an unusually high number of hidden paths to discover.

I do not care for the fact that some achievements are time-based, which is a staple of 2D platforming Metroid games. Also, the fact that the two higher difficulty modes can only be accessed by overwriting a previously-completed existing save file is downright foolish (boss fights and certain enemies in the highest-difficulty mode can be very frustrating, as they will K.O. Samus in only 1-2 hits). Also, the game is woefully short for its price; aside from repeatedly speedrunning the game, there is no replay value or post-game content here. Finally, it is unfortunate that some unlockables are only obtainable if certain Amiibo are used, and then only accessible after completing the game.

Overall, it's a great experience, but also a frustrating and short one.

This game has it ALL!!!

This isn't a video game! This is a world class EXPERIENCE!
Samus has never been this incredible.

Lets start with the designers were meticulous in their incorporation of the console's sterescopic 3D. Every environment is artistically perfect, and the ambient music will make you feel like you are truly isolated on the planet SR388. Between any Metroid (Side-scroller or first-person shooter), this one definitely takes the prize for most compelling visuals

The gameplay and controls are super familiar but incorporates numerous innovations for modern gamers.
Right off the bat, Samus is given the ability to counter enemy attacks and decimate them in Matrix-caliber slow motion. You can jump on a boss and load it with rockets, which is extremely fulfilling to watch.
Samus has several new abilities and powerups to make exploration very exciting and satisfying.
You are even given a scanning ability to check areas for potential hidden passages and upgrades. The map also throws in a generous number of savepoints and teleporters to eliminate the asenine tedioum found in some of the older titles.

Interestingly enough, the game is VERY long in comparison to the other side-scrolling Metroid titles. Even with all of the added features, you will be busy for a while, which is good for the gamer who really wants to get their money's worth.

The Metroid encounters in this game can get fairly repetitive but there are several unique boss battles and chase sequences that an experienced gamer should come to expect. You will feel very satisfied after each succesful boss takedown.

For: Experienced platform action gamers who have plenty of patience.

Not For: Impatient Scrubs

Great Metroid Experience

Great game for Metroid fans and 3DS owners looking for a good new game. Remake of the original gameboy version. Included are updated visuals, cutscenes and more. Optional mechanics are introduced to make exploration and gameplay easier for newcomers. Over all a very immersive and engaging single player experience. Highly recommended to add to your collection.Read full review...

Amazing Game

I loved super Metroid and this throws me back to that game, to me the graphics have a bit of a bland look from time to time. But over all the gameplay is good, the back tracking and exploring is great. And there is a lot to do and explore. Read full review...

One of the pinnacles of Metroidvania

Some of the most beautiful Metroidvania design I've seen. controls are smoother than butter. I have no major complaints with the game. Biggest thing is the soundtrack, it's nice and moody, but the most memorable songs are just the covers of old Super Metroid songs. Still not bad though.

If you want:
- a high quality Metroid experience
- a masterful Metroidvania
- one of the best Nintendo 3DS games
- to get HYPE for Metroid Dread
- to see how to do a modern remake of an archaic game exceptionally well
- a gret run and gun, platformer, adventure game that is challenging but fair

Then I can't possibly recommend this game enough. Some of the best boss fights I've ever played, by the way (been gaming for nearly two decades).

Great!

This is a gr ew at metroid game. They packaged it well and it plays great. As a huge metroid fan I would recommend this to anyone who prefers the old school style of metroid.

Pretty good remake

Not quite as good as the GBA Metroids (fusion, zero mission) but overall a good game, much better than return of Samus for the original Gameboy. I think there's too many boss fights that are almost exactly the same.Read full review...

Recommended, But Not A Classic

Samus Returns is an enjoyable Metroid game. It's more action oriented, less reliant on exploration, and a little light on the usual Metroid atmosphere, but it is fun to play, especially considering the lack of new Metroid there is to play these days. It looks fantastic, with the 3D effects really drawing you in. It's quite impressive. And the music is top notch as usual, if slightly overdone.
Recommended, but not a classic.

"Samus Returns" with "Dread" around the corner!

It's a much needed remake of a classic portable Metroid game, and upgrades everything in positive ways. The GB original was always straight forward and very linear and didn't leave room for exploration or backtracking.

However, for this remake, they expanded the map and the levels and added exploration and backtracking and even improved the way you attack to make it more of an action title. The music has been redone and improved with a heavy influence from Metroid Prime's style of ambient music, so it feels very much connected to the rest of the series.

Since Metroid Dread has just been announced for the Switch, I recommend everyone giving Samus Returns a chance not just to catch up on the franchise, but to experience how Mercury Steam makes Metroid games.

A fantastic game!

Once you get used to the timing of the melee you use against enemies, this game is awesome. Although a fan of the original and Super Metroid, I never played the Metroid 2 on Gameboy, so it was a whole new experience to me. I am now really looking foward to Metroid Dread on a Comfortable Switch Pro Controller!Read full review...
