My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George (2001)

An awesome book that kids of all ages should read. A story about a boy that runs away from the city to live in a tree deep in the woods. It tells of how he found a hollow tree and converts it to a home. It tells about survival, what plants are good for food, how to make fish hooks, and many other things. There is also some history and descriptions of the times, I'm guessing around 1945ish.
This is a reprint of a book I read when I was a kid(a long time ago). It was excellent then and was an excellent re-read now. When first read, I lived in Philly, PA and was the cause of childhood dreams of living in the wilderness, trapping, hunting, fishing and living off the land. About 2 years after reading, my family decided to pack up and move to Washington state where I have used things from the book many times over.
A wonderful read!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best ever book for kids on living off the land. Adventure is set in New York state.

Great plot supported by the author's extensive knowledge of nature. Teen aged boy runs away to an abandoned family farm and lives off the land with the aid of a hawk he trains.

Excellent story about a young boy surviving by his wits in the woods Gr 3-7

Students in grades 3-7 love this interesting story about a boy who goes to live on his own in the woods. Boys and girls find it fascinating. It is a novel that has stood the test of time .

Wonderful book! A much loved classic!

I read this book as a child and loved it! Some of the passages are still very clear in my mind decades later. This is a fictional account of a boy who runs away from home to live alone in the woods. But the depth of story and the detailed account of his various survival techniques have made many question whether the story was true. Now that I have children of my own, I had to buy the book for them. Its a great book and I highly recommend it!Read full review...

Excellent book!!

I read this book when I was in the 5th grade. I really brought back some good memories. My son, who is now in the 5th grade, really likes it too. Plus he's reading it through this summer which is also keeping him active in reading. There is a movie version available, but I think the book is better. We'll probably watch too.
Enjoy,
R/P

I read this back in the 1960s and it changed my life. This book was part of our reading class.Still to this day I spend as much time(alot of weekend and a few weeks a year)living in the woods.I dont think you can find a better book for opening the imagination of a young person then "My side of the mountain"...........just some thoughts
