Using a Netgear Router DG834

This is the second DG834 that I have bought. The first one is still in use. The second one was bought to enable a second computer to make a direct connection with the BT test socket. By experimentation I found that a broadband connection via a telephone extension provides about 4 Megabits/sec. By connecting directly to the normal BT socket the speed improves to 5 Megabits/sec. However by connecting directly to the internal BT test socket the speed doubles to 10/12 Megabits/sec. This is a fiddle to achieve, but the result is that my main computer (which runs on Ubuntu Linux) has very fast broadband connection. Using the two routers my second computer (running on XP) can still connect to the broadband via a telephone extension when occasionally needed.
Whilst this particular router, which is cable only, is not the latest technology,it is adequate for household use, easy to set up and has proved to be very reliable. There is nothing to dislike about it.

Buy it for the VPN Functionality......

This is a pretty standard offering from Netgear, with all the usual features you'd expect from an ADSL Modem/Wireless Router. With one exception - the included VPN functionality. You can take 2 of these routers and create a site to site IPSec VPN link, or use an IPSec client. This functionality is usually only provided in far more expensive devices, whereas if you shop around on eBay you can pick these routers up for as little as £10 each!

We use the v3 version, updated to the latest firmware, and it has been working faultlessly for the last couple of months.

Highly recommended for this alone.

Good Value for Money Wireless Router

I needed a new wireless router as my previous one died on me. My nephew recommended this to me as he has the same and said it would be easy for me to set up. He was right, within 10 minutes I had swapped my broken router for this and it was working perfectly. It's on show in my hallway so it had to look good and be compact too so as not to unduly draw attention to it. I can connect to my broadband really quickly and have even recommended it to my daughter.Read full review...

Great product does what it said on the box.

I bought this on reccomendation from a friend. It was easy to set up and was working within minutes. It transformed my web experience compared to my BT Voyager modem supplied by AOL. I also wired up a second machine after a few days and this work like a dream too. Great product.Read full review...

Quality at the right price

Netgear have a reputation for producing quality gear.
Although the DG834 is the wired version of their routers it is sufficient for the stand alone user who does not want to provide the whole street with a free wireless connection.
It is easy to set up and is frequently priced on EBay at a very competitive price.
This machine is a lot better than some of the other major players in the market.

Stable & reliable wired network ADSL modem/router. Good value product.

Great 4 port ADSL modem/router - Stable and reliable provided you upgrade the software to the latest version.
Just the job for those who don't want (or need) wireless capability, particularly in a small business environment where security is important.
I have used these before with port forwarding to allow remote CCTV monitoring of premises on a 24/7 basis.
Best thing about Netgear modem/routers is the well laid out menu pages with relevant help information in the right hand pane, so you don't have to trawl about looking for info.
Used Prestige and D-link products, but I don't find them as easy to configure.
Online support pages at Netgear, even for older versions is excellent.
Recommended.

Well worth the money

Having used a Netgear DG632 wired modem router for several years, I though it time to try the newer DG 834. The difference in speed between the two is about 20% - additionally, it is a more secure modem. It enables me to connect via network to my desktop computer, although my Apple Airport Extreme can still be connected through the router as required for laptop use via network cable.

The netgear is good value and I have already learnt from web forums that firmware upgrading is risky, so I'm happy with my lot.

Net Gear DG834 Wired Router

My old Speedtouch router became suspect when my broadband connection became unreliable. I decided try a cheap secondhand replacement because I was not sure whether the router or my broadband provider was the problem. I noted that the DG834 was still in production and I won a used version 3 on ebay for £10 including postage. The router did not include the installation CD or instructions but I downloaded and printed the installation manual from the Netgear website. The set up went well and without any problems, without the CD the connection is made manually and a wizard can automatically determine the detail settings. The router works really well and gives a reliable and faster connection. Job done for minimal outlay.Read full review...

GOOD TWEAKABLE ROUTER FOR THE INITIATED

This is a great product if you want to tweak Broadband. Lots of software available. beware, however, of Sky variants - you will need to reflash if you want to look at line stats etc. Also take care to check model if you want wifi.Read full review...

Improved broadband speeds

I bought this to replace a 7 year old D-link, because broadband speeds, especially upload, could drop to 30kBs from time to time. a week after installing the upload speeds became twice the best I could obtian previously. Frequency of having to power it off and on again to restore connection also dramatically reduced. (ISP advises keeping router/modens powered 24/7)
Some trouble adjusting videophone settings to work on the new router/modem but this is not the router's fault.
