Great router

I am a big fan of netgear and decided to stick with them even though there are other tempting options from asus and d-link at the moment. And I went with the x8 instead of the hot new x10 for a few reasons. One is bank for my buck, the new x10 and d-link have a 60GHz band but most devices can't use this band yet. There will be plenty soon but in my near future I don't plan to invest in devices that can operate this frequency. Not to mention the 60GHz needs to be very close to the devices connecting to it, 10 feet away and a wall are enough to drop the connection.

The x8 has one 2.4GHz and two 5GHz bands so there is plenty of devices that are able to connect at higher speeds and the 2.4GHz gives great range. I have had no issue connecting anywhere in my home on the 5GHz (single story 1900sq/ft)

I have really enjoyed the router so far, I have it paired with a surfboard 6190 modem with 150 connection from xfinity. There are plenty of Ethernet ports for most applications as well as usb 3.0. I have two laptops, one desktop and 4 tv connected as well as several home automation devices ( video doorbell, cameras, sprinkler system, lights, blinds and vacuum) plus standard phone usage on wifi. This router has other features I have yet to dive into but I will mention 2 Ethernet ports that are given priority when bandwidth is needed for high demand gaming. This router is more than enough if you have mediocre to above average needs and arguably enough for any single home application for the near future.

If you want to be ready for the next wave of technology you may want to consider picking up a router with the 60GHz frequency. But keep in mind the extreme limitation on range before diving in and spending $450 on a router that needs to be very close to devices.

Fail with infinite loop

This router has failed one month after of open, and has irreparable reboot loop. Netgear don't help to solve the problem :(... suddenly, router began to reboot constantly and don't assign DHCP addresses, no receive Internet and was impossible connect to device with LAN ping, USB and any other form. Is a brick of $250 or more!!
I do not recommend this article, please see other alternatives. (Please read "netgear r8500 reboot loop" in Google Search)

Broke within a week

Stopped giving signal within a week despite current software updates. To begin with, in a 2000sq ft house, and a 300mbps Modem and internet plan, the fastest speed was 38mbps upstairs while router was in basement. Bought google WiFi.. my signal is now 240mbps!Read full review...

Firmware causes it to brick.

Received and set up, worked great the first day then nothing but an orange flashing light. Look up ac5300 brick and you will find on google a bunch of similar complaints. I read that if you take the time to load the first version software and don’t allow it to update that it’s a great router however I don’t think I should have to do all that. Besides it’s enormous. We bought an asus and that one has been fine.Read full review...

Bad product but good seller

The X8 is suppose to be a great product and one of the best router in the market. So I updated the firmware straight out of the box and set it to smart connect on the personal
Setting of the router. I think this router is overrated it didn't work at all in the 5ghz bands and only in the 2.4ghz. I think I'm gonna try to asus or d-link.Read full review...

Excellent home router

This router has solved my internet problems at my house. Simple to set up but takes a bit to figure out how to prioritize devices. However, even before figuring this out, with multiple devices connected, this router exceeded my expectations. Wifi range isn't bad either (850 sq ft house with the router in the basement and I get full signal all throughout my house). Overall, I would highly recommend this router if you have multiple devices that need Wifi access and streaming.Read full review...
