Good camera

Great all around camera. Takes nice pics and surprisingly good video too. If you plan to use the full 26x zoom then a tripod is a must for clear photos, at that range a steady hand simply isn't enough prevent blurred photos. You can get a good tripod for around $20-$30. Also worth considering is an external battery charger. You can get a charger with 2 extra batteries for less than $20. Perfect for the average consumer. Not SLR quality, but not SLR price either. Price is a little high but worth it, and there are good deals to be had on this camera if you shop around too. I've wasted money on lesser cameras and had sub par results as well. I have two small boys who are NEVER still and have had a hard time taking good photos with other cameras. This camera has the response time and photo quality to meet the job. I definately recomend this camera.Read full review...

Great High-End Point-and-Shoot

The Nikon P100 includes 10.3 MP, 26x zoom, an electronic viewfinder, up to 10 frames per second, full HD (1080p) video, high-speed video, a pop-up flash, face-tracking, smile-detecting, and continuous sport modes, and a pull-out screen. This is a great camera with lots of great features. It looks and feels like a small DSLR, except for manual zoom. The electronic viewfinder is good for keeping the camera steady, and this camera is also a great video camera. The only thing lacking about this camera is the photo quality. It's acceptable, but noise and soft edges appear when you're zoomed in a lot. This camera is not very small, but its not too big and its not very heavy. I would recommend this camera to amateur photographers looking for a relatively cheap entry-level DSLR type camera.Read full review...

Older Digital Camera for Current Photography Needs

Camera is easy to learn and quite capable for wildlife cataloging and viewing. Video processes are smooth. Accessories are still easy to find. Great on a tripod, as well. Recommend Nikon Coolpix P100/P500 for those just learning or on a budget.Read full review...

Excellent camera and value. Simple to use and has lots more features than I will ever use. you could spend three times as much on a new camera and not have all the features or quality this camera has.

Not Bad For The Price

This camera has amazing zoom capabilities but if you want to try to take professional pics i.e., pictures of your toddler sitting in his favorite chair with a black sheet hanging behind him while he's wiggling back and forth will not produce sharp images. Any fast movement of the "subject" will have a blurry effect. I was mislead and a little disappointed in that feature but happy with the rest of the camera. It does take rather good pictures for the average/ learning-to-be-a-pro picture taker and with its 4 second shutter response, you can take continuous pics quite frequently. We'll keep this camera until we upgrade to an SLR camera ($1000 and up) and if I stay happy with this model then I'll buy within the Nikon family. So far, not bad for the money.Read full review...

Ehhhhhh...Nikon could have done better.

This camera has a whole lot going for it, but image quality is not one of them. If you are thinking of getting this as a substitute or bridge to your DSLR, you will be disappointed. I guess the best way to describe picture quality is...the pictures just aren't sharp, it takes several tries to get an image that is acceptable. However, if you don't know what DSLR quality is, this is a good upgrade from a regular point and shoot...things like the tilt screen and super zoom make it awesome for things like concerts, video is pretty good...high speed video is an added bonus, although it degrades the video. I'm not going to say I don't recommend this camera, but I know what pictures should look like, and this camera didn't take pictures any better than my 2 year old Nikon point and shoot...so I was kind of disappointed...I will also say low light settings are a no go with this camera.

If you are looking for outstanding picture quality, its a no....but if other things come into play...1080p video, tilt screen, etc...consider it...as for me, I learned my lesson and returned it. I'll be purchasing the Nikon D3100, instead...too bad its double the price.

Great little camera.Looks very much like "the big boys"

While I already have a DSLR, a surprising thing is that this Nikon has a lower starting aperture than NY Canon Rebel's 18-55 mm lens. It's also great to take to a concert or sporting event because since the lens doesn't come off, they'll be more likely to let you in! I was able to bring it to a live music concert and a college football game. I even brought it into an art museum!Read full review...

Packed features Great Camera No Problems

Lots of nice manual features, Zoom 26x amazing. Pictures in low or no light are great. I have taken 500 pictures with this Cool Pix P100, owned now for 6 weeks, NO LOCK UPS, with this. Amazing Sterio sound and Video. Video can be played back and burned from apple quick time format. I do see some times images that are out of focus a bit, mainly from using the high powered zoom.
I got this off e-bay from shutterbug as a refurbished model around $60 to $80 less than a new one. Battery life seems to be good and it will warn you with a battery icon light flashing on the screen. Mine came on while out side doing video in 10 degree weather. I was able to stop doing what I was recording without having the camera shut done like I see other camera do, they will just shut down. Fuji fine pix S700 gives you about 5 seconds after the battery icon comes on before it dies. The Fine Pix is very noisy trying to focus. I abused this Nikon camera outside in 10 degree weather and it still was able to take great pictures, just make sure the battery is fully charged. Picturs taken in the dark without flash come up brighter than what your eyes see. Only thing I can complain about is the zoom is just a bit noisy. Some do not like the fast zoom but I like it. I have owned 4 other cameras from Kodak, and Fuji and this is much better than the others. If you think it will out perform an SL model you probably will be a little disappointed with this. But it was not intended to do better than the $499 camera, I paid $255 for mine and it is a great deal at that price. The Manual is well written too.
I am very happy with this sofar.

Nice cam for the photo hobbiest-but not top of the line

I really love this camera, first and foremost. I bought it to upgrade from my little Canon PowerShot SD600. Which, really, the PowerShot proved to be a nice little camera. Granted, I never used the "zoom" function, being that it was entirely digital-and I had to edit every single photo from this little guy to increase brightness/contrast as well as reduce digital noise. And even then my images were still fairly grainy.

But I just got this p100 and I'm really happy with it, to be honest. I know it's not top of the line, nor even really close to it, but it's really what I was looking for. I do plan to some day invest in a nice DSLR but this guy will definitely be able to sustain my photography hobby until I decide to turn it into a business. I took some pictures the first day, outdoors, and on a sort of rainy overcast type day and got some decent pictures. The zoom really blew me away at 26xoptical. Far cry from my little canon. The textures it picks up and the extent of detail...even in extraordinarily dim settings is truly phenomenal. I was standing a good 4-5 feet away from a wilting rose in our garden and got a picture that appeared to be at macro setting by using [some of] the zoom! I couldn't believe the details of the flower that it was able to render...not to mention how brilliantly colored it was. The lack of digital noise was astounding. It still has digital noise, don't get me wrong, but it's substantially less than what I'm used to working with. It also edits out quite nicely on the computer to virtually nonexistent. It's so small it won't make a difference...especially since this baby takes 9"x12" photos!

Something I didn't like about this camera, at first, was that is seems quite intimidating due to it's excessive amounts of features. I'm starting to get used to it, but it was complicated at first. It's not one of those cameras you can just pick up and use. Also, the menu/settings function is a bit wacky. I have to leave the view of my image to be taken to edit certain settings. The thing I liked about my old camera was that you could edit white balance and all that other stuff while still viewing the image. Though, it does open a preview up again for specifically white balance when you select that option...but I don't like loading the whole menu screen. It makes the process seem quite complicated and long. I use manual settings for the most part, so I'm used to having to adjust for the perfect image...however it is quite cumbersome with this camera due to the menu set up. I do like, however, that you can change the aperture/shutter speed with just one or two clicks and without loading the menu screen...however, I do wish the image options were all together and more easily accessible.

Overall, I would rate this camera pretty high. I think it can stand up to most of the comparable models out there. I decided to go with Nikon because my film camera is a Nikon and I had a good experience with them. Also, the price was right for me especially due to being able to get a lot of other bonus items with my purchase. The zoom is definitely what sold me over all, though. 26xoptical zoom is pretty powerful for a medium sized camera. I would recommend this product to other people, because I know it will get the job done.

Great camera for travel in India

I bought this camera before going on a trip to India where I knew that I might want to make photographs sometimes from a distance. The Nikon Coolpix P100 was perfect for the job. Since it was a new purchase I had no familiarity with the product beforehand, but with a little help from the booklet (included) and some tests I was quickly up to speed. The 26X zoom is amazing and the clarity of images (to a non photo amateur) is extremely good. I hesitated to buy an SLR camera, but I did not want to deal with having to change the lens to get close-up shots (in the past I had a film SLR with 2 lenses and that was always complicated) - I purchased a refurbished version of the camera and it worked perfectly. I also purchased a package with an extra battery (recommended!) and a 16Gb SD card and I had a 4Gb backup that I did not have to use. The one thing I regret about this camera is that when filming rather than photographing the focus cannot be changed (the zoom can be changed but the zoom cannot and that can result in blurry film). The HD movies are great though and a nice addition to photos. Another great feature of the camera is the fact that one can use the flat panel or switch to an occular visor. The flat panel can rotate and extend and that makes taking some pictures in the street less conspicuous.

In summary:
- I bought if for a trip and glad I did
- what I like most if the amazing 26X zoom, a deciding factor in my decision
- what I like the least is the fact that focus cannot be changed when using the filming mode
- I would buy it again for all the positive reasons I have mentioned.

This is a very good camera with a great value, even more so if you get it as a refurbished item. It provides a great alternative to more expensive SLR cameras.
