Great nikon as described great company and very satisfied. A++++++

This company has a very good selection of Nikons. I had a D-40 years ago and never had one problem from it. Nice and sharp photos as good as my D-5100 today. These D-40s are a great backup too. Plus the smaller censor adds to the lens magnification. Excellent camera I got from this good company and very clean and it works well. Thanks A++++++Read full review...

Cheap batteries and charger

Camera seems nice but still trying to figure out how to use it without a manual. It also didn’t come with a charging cord for the generic battery charger. Came with a generic battery and charger from China, nothing to do with Nikon, so I won’t be trusting the actual battery that was sent with the camera, as I’ve bought non Nikon Batteries in the past and they didn’t hold a charge. Great value, all around package.

This makes a great all around kit for getting serious about taking digital pictures. The Nikon D40 is a real easy to use basic digital SLR. I will plug kenrockwell.com also. He turned me on to this great value camera.

In my opinion the gem in this kit is the 18-200mm VR lens. This is really the only lens you need. It does have more weight than the 18-55mm lens but you have almost 2 lenses in one.

There are some drawbacks for power users. High ISO pictures turn out too grainy for most users. Getting to the functions like ISO requires you to stop shooting and go into the menu.

My Nikon D300s is clearly a better camera, but it should be given the cost.

Great camera for the starter or the pro.

This is a great entry camera. I made somewhat of a switch from using cannons to buying this Nikon d40. I liked the price first. But the camera has very clear pictures, intuitive controls (if you have a Canon now the controls are just flipped) . The camera communicates well with my Mac and PCs. The menus and feed back is clear and my lenses have worked great.
The only issues I have with it is that (1) the display doesn't turn off when you put the camara to your face like a rebel it waits for you to press the shudder release 1/2 way. So you have some light in your face for a moment. There isn't as far as I have seen an option to put the focus on a separate button than the shudder release like the canons.

Nikon D40 Kit

i had been using this camera for about a week now. its been a great camera as a starter for photography. the only thing which i found is that when you are taking a picture its more handy if they have the ability for the user to select if he/she want to use the viewfinder or the LCD screen for the display. The D40 doesnt support the lcd screen when taking a picture. other than that everything else seems really nice. flash seems to be good. macro is good (objects can be closen up upto about 8-10") im happy for my buy.

cheers

Great little DSLR

I was angling for a D90, but my wife had a D80 and really, we didn't need two of the same camera. Opted for the cheaper d40 and I am very happy with the decision. It's lighter, more compact and very easy to use. Has great features and works with the lenses we already had. If you aren't a pro, or are a pro and want a lighter camera for travel, this is the one.Read full review...

Great for beginners and serious hobbyists alike

Purchased the D40 to replace a broken D70. I couldn't be more happy. This is a nice little compact SLR for beginning photographers and serious hobbyists alike. It's super lightweight and is easily used in the spur of a moment with one hand. The images rendered are crystal clear with exceptional color. The only drawback is that not all Nikkor/Nikon lenses are completely compatible with the body. Some will not autofocus (which is not a big problem as I prefer to manually focus anyway) and some will not meter. Just be sure to purchase AF-S or AF-1 lenses and everthing is functional. Thinking about selling my extra D70 body and replacing with another of these.Read full review...

Wow, this camera is the bees knees!

As an amatuer photographer, I've mostly stuck to simple SLR's, forgoing digital because I always thought they were all the kind you'd find for less than a hundred bucks at Target or Wally world. I was proven wrong when I was searching for a nice digital camera and stumbled across the Nikon D40, first through ebay and then on several websites that swear by it.

I haven't had a full chance to give this puppy a test run quite yet. Once I have the battery charged I'll be able to really let her rip and see what she's capable of, but even with the minimal use I've had I'm quite impressed with it. The settings are easy to understand and the best part is that the LCD screen will help you understand aperture settings and what not, so I appreciate that Nikon did a user-friendly interface for beginners. I'm disappointed that the manual setting isn't exactly up to snuff, but until I figure out how to properly use that particular setting, I'm gonna stick with Automatic and use Manual with my Vivitar.

Perfect beginner or amateur model with outstanding results every time.

I have owned and used a D40 for several years. Only recently did I upgrade to a much more advanced D7000, and believe me, the D40 is still dear to my heart. It is lightweight, easy to use and takes outstanding clean, sharp and bright photos with rarely a glitch. Perfect for students, housewives, first time or slightly advanced digital SLR users. Set to fully automatic for easy point and shoot or manually adjust any or all aspects of the shutter, aperture, ISO and bracketing very easily. Intuitive menu system. One of the best things about this is that the photos don't take up a lot of space on a hard drive, but are still high quality. Don't let salesmen talk you into more and more megapixels. It only leads to exponentially larger file sizes and now my aging PC locks up with the files from the D7000 because of their size and storage requirements. As a bonus the D40 is one of the few digital cameras that does not block infrared light from reaching the sensor, so with an IR filter you can experiment inexpensively ($17) with fun and interesting infrared photos. These are now being sold by people "upgrading", and they're great deals for the money. Batter lasts a Looooong time - mine NEVER died on me during a full day of carrying. Just make sure you get a compatible lens or two and start shooting excellent photos tomorrow!Read full review...
