Great photos from great camera for great price!

Non D40 good DSLR for its age! Especially for the current pricing. Image quality is very good with nice natural colors.
Lightweight and easy to use controls. Has auto focus points and sometimes will focus on nearest object which may not be in the middle of the scene. But glad I bought it and would do so again. Read full review...

Nikon D40x excellent choice

My D40x is in my car at all times. I use it to “protect” my newer and much more expensive Nikon DSLR cameras. It uses all Nikon F mount lenses, except for the newest AF-P versions. It is small, light, simple to use with excellent image quality. I bought a camera armor case for $5 on eBay.Read full review...

More for the money than you can imagine

It is simply an excellent camera that consistently provides very good clear images. Even the auto selection is very reliable and I am new with this kind of Camera so I am slowly learning some of the sophisticated aspects that this camera provides. I am a believer and I am completely enjoying using the camera on and learning more about each day. Read full review...

The Nikon D40X is a keeper. I'm very happy with it.

I purchased this as a replacement for a Canon EOS Rebel XT. I use the Nikon D40X primarily for Ebay pictures and for other documentation type photos.

The reason for my switch from Canon to Nikon is complicated, but goes something like this. After picking up a Nikon F4 35mm camera for almost $0.00 and playing with it, I began to believe that Nikon's glass was better than much of the Canon glass. It also had something to do with my son who is a, professional photographer, giving my Canon XT dirty looks every chance he got. I also had not been totally pleased with the fine detail I saw out of the Canon. It seemed like portrait photos showed a harsher skin than was seen in real life.

At any rate, I made the switch. I am very pleased with the Nikon D40X. I like the color that I get directly from the camera. I am very happy with the above mentioned fine detail that I see in the jpgs. It seems that there is an on going battle on the www concerning CCD vs. CMOS technology and since the Canon was CMOS and the Nikon is CCD I landed squarely in the middle of that battle. I have to say I like the Nikon's photos better than the Canon's. Whether this is the sensor technology or a function of the software in the two cameras I can't say. But the Nikon D40X works better all around for me.

Please note that if I'm photographing anything important that I have the time to wait on I do that in either 35mm or 120 film and digitize the negatives, with the prices of 35mm equipment these days that's a no-brainer!

If I had it to do over again I would have the Nikon D40X over the Canon EOS Rebel XT. If the shutter crashes on the Nikon I will probably replace it myself ($22.95 on Ebay.)

Good value

It is a great value. Especially for taking photos in good light. Colors really pop. Not super in low light.

Nikon D-40

This camera is light weight and small. Very handy. 6.1 mp is limited for extreme enlargements, but certainly good for up to 8X10.

Nikon d40

I had never used a dslr before. I had read this is a good starter camera for around $100.00. It is. Very easy to figure out most of it just messing around with it. If you need some info there is a bunch written on the d40 online. It doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of the newer dslr's, but a good place to start for the money and will make a good out and about/backup camera. Read full review...

First camera that an amateur can use to get professional quality pictures!!

Having not done any serious photography since high school, it was a big leap for me to move from a film camera to a DSLR. Having used this now for 3 weeks though it's so much easier and produces much better results. This was initially purchased just to get back into the photography hobby but has since turned into a new found happiness.

Simple to use with automatic mode and produces crisp, clear and beautiful colors as well as amazingly defined edges in your pictures. Much lighter than some of the film cameras I used in high school and afterwards and much better weight balance. Easily interchangeable lenses and battery life that can last for weeks even after several hundred photos.
No real negatives on this camera. It's great for the beginner or advanced photographer and will give beginner to intermediates huge room for growth. This is the absolute best all-around camera I've ever seen or owned! In manual mode you have all the professional quality features you would normally have with any SLR camera but with a bonus of having a built in CPU to handle the small and sometimes annoying details.

Comparing this to the old Pentax and Olympus cameras I used in high school is unfair considering they were made in the 60's. What does stand out though is the quicker shooting time and less set-up time to capture amazingly brillant photos. Better yet is the no chemicals and film/darkroom process that we used to have to deal with. Now you can genuinely shoot like a pro without thousands of dollars investment!
The plethora of readily available and affordable lenses also allows you to take a very wide range of subjects from nature, science, people, autos, motorcycles, action shots, space, architecture or almost anything you could possibly imagine. With this camera there is absolutey NO limitations!!!
