This is a Nikon DX Professional top of the range lens designed for people who like real quality.

I always kept this larger 17-55mm lens for use on my Nikon D300. (old dx classic). It does work well on Nikon D700 in cropped mode. Daily in 2019 I carry in my camera bag a Nikon D3300 with the 18-55mm DX much lighter lens. Compare the two and it's amazing how sharp the smaller dx lens compares to the larger and much heavier 17-55mm DX . In this practical world of carrying lightweight gear around my neck or in my camera bag, I'd choose the smaller and lighter items! Back home (at the Ranch with a Tripod) I would only use the D300 with this 17-55mm lens (or FX larger lenses like the 14-24mm. 70-200mm f/2.8 70-300mm) the Nikon FX 70-300mm has the faster mode auto focus compared to the much slower dx 55-300mm and is probably the very best long range and fast focusing lens that should be next to this 17-55mm lens. It's fair to say: Horses for Courses!Read full review...

Nikon quality as one would expect. Fabulous lens.

As I am a professional photographer I require the best quality products. This lens is wonderful quality both optically and speed wise. I use it so much it really is my main lens. I use it with a whole variety of Nikon cameras including a Nikon D850, D500, D300 and even a D70 altered to be Infrared. Amazing lens and so versatile.Read full review...

unbeatable general-purpose zoom for DX cameras

It's an expensive lens that's worth every penny. If you need image quality, fast accurate AF even with low-light conditions, if you can't afford to lose an image due to hunting focus, this is the lens for you.
It's not in the same league as the "poor" cousins by Sigma and Tamron, it's just not the same.
If you need a lens to take snaps from your kids, go for the chaep ones; but if you mean serious business, don't think twice, get this Nikon gem!

A classic piece of glass for DX cameras. Every kit should include this.

Pin sharp images, even wide open. Built like a tank. Weather resistant. This is a real pro level piece of kit. Very expensive new but at the right price used it is great value for money and highly recommended.Read full review...

Pro lens for DX

Cracking quality pro lens for DX system. Highly recommend, only down side weight but it’s worth putting up with, also the zoom ring doesn’t always fall naturally to use, due to slim size of zoom ring. Just a niggle but still worth having if you can pick one up at the right price.Read full review...

Great Glass

You will have read expert reviews before tracking this lens so no technical details from me. Great glass giving fantastic results and one of my go to lenses. You will need a gym membership to build arm strength as it is a big lump. Well worth the effort if you can find a good one.Read full review...

The best professional mid range for Nikon DX

This is the best mid range professional 2.8 lens for the Nikon DX ! period.

PROS
1. sharp - oh yes ! Right from 2.8 too
2. acceptable bokeh - doesnt compare to bokeh cream lenses like 85mm 1.4 though
3. a 2.8 lens
4. great built
5. AFS & G lens - fast focus
simply professional

CONS
1. heavy than consumer lens but what else do you expect from a quality optic
2. beware of fallen / dented zooms sold on ebay as 'mildly stiff zooms' - this equals hefty repair !

when one can afford it, go for it, as there is no other lens to beat it.

I bought this mainly to have a standard fast lens with wide angle facility.
I like the very fast sutofocus. The build quality is excellent.
It is a good quality lens which can be used as a standard lens.
What I dislike about it, is the weight, the zoom ring is nearest the camera.
I am enjoying the lens very much.

One of the best

This lens retails new for £1400 it's weather sealed and for me does not need image stabilization as I'm normally photographing moving people it would be useless anyway. The large f2.8 aperture makes for a higher shutter speed anyway.Read full review...

Harder than hell

Such an awesome lens! Rigid and tight though I bought a cheap one and it sure can be told from seeing the outside it’s been to hell and back with rigorous use!
