Quality build, excellent battery life

This is my second visit to Windows phone 8. I wanted a 4.7" screen in a relatively compact case and decent battery life. Also, I wanted a removable battery and microSD card slot. The Nokia 735 has all these combined with superb OLED screen and build quality, which remind me of my late lamented Nokia N9.

I've upgraded it to 8.1. Apparently version 10 is in the pipeline, but no sign of it yet. It has 1 Gb RAM and quad core processor, so it's pretty snappy. Screen scrolling is particularly smooth. It also has wireless charging (my Palm Pre had that 5 years ago!), but it's slow, so I don't use it. Placement of buttons on the right hand side of the case is near perfect. I regularly get 2-3 days between charges provided I limit my wifi use. It has 4G but my SIM doesn't have it.

Downsides... The nano SIM is ridiculously small and fiddly: they could easily have included a microSIM slot. The case back is a bit of a struggle to get off, but it does give the whole case a very neat appearance. The big downside, unfortunately, is Windows Phone 8.1. The email application is pretty dire - you can't get subscribed IMAP folders to appear in the email listings, for instance - and the web browser doesn't have a home page with bookmark tiles like Opera. The quality of most of the apps available in the Store is pretty poor - there is no decent alternative IMAP email app, for instance - nor is there a decent web browser. Being Windows Phone, there is no possibility and tweaking some of the hardware: I like to underclock my mobiles to get longer battery life.

So... one star removed for the operating system. Had this hardware been able to run N9 software, it would have been my perfect mobile. I can only dream!
