I recently joined Alanon and noticed one lady had this little book..."One Day at a Time". She told me she had started Alanon last year and found this book in the local Library. She said it had helped her soo much. Well, I wanted that help, too. So I went on Ebay and found this book. It arrived pretty quickly and I immediately began reading it. It is a Daily devotional but I (like my new friend) started at the beginning and read it all the way through in 2 days. It is just that good... seriously. Enlightening. Understanding. Definitely gives Hope. One way or the other, this book will benefit anyone affected by alcoholism. I was going to highlight key points while reading it, but there were so many gems of wisdom I would have highlighted the entire book. I am now reading one page at a time...daily...and slowly, letting it sink in. Sometimes I re-read parts and even softly read out loud to my self.
I also purchased "Courage to Change" and read that cover to cover. It, too, is very good....but "One Day at a Time" is hands down the best. I will keep it forever and use it daily. It speaks right to my soul, as a wife of an alcoholic who loves her husband of almost 50 years but can barely stand living with him a good percentage of the time. It is like an extension of an Alanon meeting. A rope thrown to a drowning woman....
I am going to purchase a few more copies so our group members can have their own book. The lady that had checked it out of the library had already renewed it twice and just hated to have to return it. I'm going to get her a book of her own.

One Day At A Time In AlAnon

It is a wonderful book for anyone who has a friend or loved one with an alcohol problem. There is a reading for each day of the year. In the index is a list of topics, so if you have a certain problem it is easy to find all the readings that deal with that particular problem. The readings are easy to understand, and very helpful in keeping us on track as we deal with living with or are associated with a person with addictions.

This book focuses on how to make ourselves better and not let a seemingly imossible situation get the best of us. As we make a better person of ourselves, the loved one with the addiction often notices a change in us and wants to do better themselves.

The daily readings were written by ordinary people, just like you and me. It is easy to relate to the situations, and good to see how others handled theirs. This gives us hope for our own lives.

The Twelve Steps are in the book. AlAnon members are urged to follow the 12 steps themselves, and in doing so will see an improvement on their own lives.

It is not a book to learn how to stop the alcoholic from drinking, or to try and change his/her behavior. It is a self-help book. Even if you don't have someone in your life with an addiction, following the 12 steps yourself will give you a better way of living and handling all of life's situations.

One Day at a time in al-anon

I bought this book to give to someone else because this book has help me out when I needed it the most. There are answers to my questions and It calmed my nerves. Something to do when it got bad! in life! I read half of it, then someone told me that it is a one day at a time book you read a page a day! ha ha. I use the back of the book when I need a certian topic for the day! I think it's one of the best books al-anon has put out!
