Mid-level DSLR features at an entry level price

The Pentax K-r has excellent image quality for a very reasonable price. The kit lens that comes with this camera (a Pentax DA L 18-55mm) is more competent than the lenses that come with similarly priced Canons or Nikons. And the K-r's feature set is a step above as well. With a very good LCD, extensive in-camera processing, in-camera shake reduction and compatibility with legacy Pentax lenses, you have a lot of room to grow with the K-r. Plus, its amazing capabilities at high ISO settings make it very versatile. I have no fear of using up to 3200 ISO with great results. Even up to 6400 will give you usable prints. This is an excellent choice as a first digital SLR camera.

The only downside is the video capability isn't quite up to par with some of the competitors. But I for one, don't really care about that. If I was serious about video, I'd buy a good camcorder. If you want a camera that's easy to use, very ergonomic, and really well built, you couldn't do much better than the K-r. And it has it where it really counts - image quality is superb!

Can NOT Go Wrong with this Camera!

This camera is simply amazing!

Pros:
·IS/OS/VR/SR in body
·Build quality
·1.5x/1.6x crop sensor class leading high ISO low light imaging
·Great dynamic range
·Excellent array of programmable features
·Excellent in camera tools
·Price
·Excellent details and colors
·Quick and responsive
·Excellent 11 point AF system
·Up to 12,800 ISO range, usable at max ISO too!
·Great battery life with NiMh and simply amazing on Lithiums!
·LCD color calibration ability for accuracy
·As with all Pentax dSLRs, this body is no different with its very in depth white balance controls
·Distortion and CA correction built in for Pentax DA and DFA lenses
·RAW conversion in camera
·In camera HDR ability up to 3 images
·Very fast shooting with a 4.7fps capability

Cons:
·Lack of HDMI connector
·Lack of visible AF points in VF
·Can clip highlights in certain scenarios
·Auto white balance under certain artificial light sources is unreliable

This body is about the best bang for the buck dSLR currently on the market. Placed in the total entry level for price point but offering most features of the middle line like the Canon 50/60D and Nikon D90 bodies, but build is not quite as good as those. You really can not go wrong with this camera, especially if you shoot a lot of low light and higher ISO shots and action shots.

Superb camera for everyone.

Excellent camera. Works well at high ISO, very user-friendly menu and camera control. The lens is supplied with a well-assembled and makes a sharp image with good color reproduction, this lens will suffice for the first time that the user can opredilit what he needs in the future.

Battery lasts about 500 shots without flash, but it is a bit lacking at first. On ebay there is a higher capacity battery and are not expensive compared with counterparts from Canon or Nikon.

The only negative I noticed about this camera - it's the wrong white balance when shooting at night. The camera determines the white balance wrong when the light bulb, but this is easily solved by setting the white balance manually. No problem.

Canon and Nikon have no competitors in this price category. Camera with which you can compare comfort, performance and image quality:
I think that this will be the Canon 600d and Nikon d5100, but these cameras are much more expensive. On the characteristics of the shooting video, I do not watch because we see the camera, not camcorder and combine these things are not worth it.

The picture quality goes beyond what I anticipated.

The camera gives me a very good feel when I take pictures. The features are fairly easy to manipulate. I am not used to taking videos with camera, but know that it will also be easy when I devote some time to learn it. I have used an earlier version of a Pentax still camera (Pentax K1000) and the Pentax K-r made my shooting more lively. The picture quality goes beyond what I anticipated.Read full review...

Great for old lenses, powerfull camera.

I bought this camera because of the compatibility with older lenses and I'm pleased with the results. I'm using a Hanimex 70-210mm 3.5-4.5 and a Rikenon 50mm 1.7 of some old RICOH SLR and they work great!
Also the built-in shake reduction, battery option, live view, dinamic range compensation, etc are a bunch of fantastic features.
I agree that this must be one of the best entry level DSLR in the market.

Great middle entry level DSLR for budget!

I've been using lots of DSLR
(Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D, Pentax K20D, K-7, K-X, now, I only have K-R.)

and this one is the beast!

compared to other entry level camera for similar price (Nikon D3100, Canon rebel

T1i, Sony A550) it's better. (not much, slightly better, and many functions like

usable filters, custom function, better AF than older Pentax Model include

k-x, k-7, k20D, etc...)

If you're in a tight budget for your first DSLR, this one will be best :)

I'm no pro that's for sure but this camera makes taking good pictures easy. It's awesome! It has helped improve my picture taking abilities. I added a PENTAX smc DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED 300mm lens and looking forward to some wildlife photography.Read full review...

Great value, excellent features. Amazing introductory dSLR!

Excellent camera. Would gladly buy again, and worth much more than the price tag. Canon and Nikon can't compete with the K-r for less that $800. (K-r runs between $525 - $650.)

Great product for the value!

Excellent for the price I paid. Good features, I recommend getting into the forum since there are some tips about changing ISO from 200 to 100 (also cover in the manual).

This camara is perfect for the beginner to intermediate enthusiastic photographer.

But you could do absolutely all of it as professional techniques.
