Palm is Palm

Though the technology is outdated now,old is still gold.Compared to the new fangled devices, the Palm is still a pretty sturdy piece of hardware that still connects and functions like it was supposed to in its time. Yes guaranteed new technology is faster, sleeker and shinier but it has its own woes. If you are looking for a handy device to use as an eBook Reader, browse the web, play music via bluetooth to a connected speaker and still have a long battery life after all this then you will get far with the Palm. Unfortunately the APP market for it is officially shutdown operations but you can still acquire what you need from people like me who love the sturdy form factor and simple APPs that do what they should. Having WiFi and Bluetooth is an added bonus. Of course Memory is limited but don’t forget the device came out when a gigabyte of memory was considered a lot by manufacturers and people were using Pocket PC’s with 64MB etc. The device can support up to a 4 GB SD card with a special method but a normal FAT32 formatted 2GB card will work out of the box. Enough to store multiple books and music. If nothing else get it for its sentimental value when the pencil box Nokia’s were the in thing and a single battery charge lasted for days not hours.Read full review...

If you can avoid obnoxious screen whine, the Tungsten TX is fine.

I picked this up as part of a retro tech kick I've been on. Started with an older Palm OS device, but wanted something with WiFi, which led me here.

Positives

-Classic Palm resistive touchscreen. Responds to a light touch compared to many Pocket PC devices.
-Huge array of Palm OS software/games available if you know how to find that sort of thing.

Negatives

-Screen whine. Apparently a widespread issue with time, my used model was affected. There's an app (Whinehack) that helps, but it's still pretty annoying and certainly doesn't entice me to use the device. Opening an intense app also stops the hack from working, bringing whine back to full, very annoying volume.
-Palm OS really shows its age more than the device. Despite having much more capable hardware than the Handspring Visor Neo I also have, the most useful parts of Palm OS function quite similarly. Despite the 200Mhz processor, there's no HTML web browser that is even a little bit usable from my testing, which is a disappointment. There's apparently a hack to allow WPA security, but I haven't tested this.

If you're looking for a Palm OS 5 device so you can run a wide variety of old apps, this fits the bill, but the screen whine is annoying enough that I wouldn't recommend one of these for a retro tech enthusiast in 2018. Hopefully the value goes up on these, though I'm certainly not helping myself with this review.

My review of the Palm TX

Nice large screen so I can see appointments and tasks much easier than on my Z22. It also displays more information, pertaining to calendar and tasks, on the home screen. It does have wifi and I have gotten online when I was near a router. The writing pad is more responsive than the Z22, however, and I find myself adding spaces and periods where I didn't want them. This isn't really a problem with the Palm TX, just that my writing style was set from the Z22. You might not even notice. Syncs with my Outlook with no problems and I like the one button sync tool on the charger which you press instead of going a lot of other motions.

I wish the writing pad at the bottom of the screen was a little smaller so more information could be posted on the home screen. I had problems installing the software that came with the product, but I just went to the Palm website and downloaded the latest version of Desktop Manager instead. I had hoped to be able to use my Blackberry cell phone to get the Palm online when away from a router, but that has proved to be unsuccessful. I also do not care for the charger setup. Instead of a regular USB connection, like on the Z22, it has a prong type setup instead which, for me, is not as easy to use.

Overall the Palm TX is a nice unit and stores a lot of information. Except for having the wifi feature, and larger print which is nice for old eyes, it isn't all that much different than the Z22 and I could have saved myself some money. If this is going to be your first handheld, however, you will probably like it.

Great for organization, Good for music, lousy/inhibited internet and email

I wanted to use the TX for 3 reasons. Organization, music player, and emails(internet connectivity). It works Great as an organization tool, and although i'm disappointed the max SD card you can use is a 2G, it works pretty well as music player.

Despite recognizing wifi networks, I can't connect (w/wpa security correct). I was able to connect to one wifi network, Email- my yahoo account was correct with in/out servers. the device simply doesn't have the storage and power. Internet browsing- servers and networks simply don't support such an old device anymore, so you are extremely limited if you can connect.

Hot Sync is also a piece of crap, so getting anything on the TX without an SD card is very difficult. I haven't been able to install any apps.

A great tool. A little dated now, but very useful.

The Palm TX is the end of the line for the PDA that didn't start life as a cellphone. If you are looking for a media player, buy something else. It has limited player potential, generally only MP3. An app purchase will resolve that, but media playback isn't why you should buy this device. The screen is large, but not the resolution of modern TFT display. So don't buy it to watch videos. Now that I have said the cons, let's get to the pros. For all it's shortcomings, the Palm TX was ahead of its time and still proves to be one of my favorite devices to carry with me everyday.

The Palm TX with its touch screen, Wireless - WPA capable, and thousands of applications at dataviz, handango and Palm native makes the TX one of the most useful devices I carry. I have only had it a month or so and it already is carried as often as my BlackBerry and is just as useful.

I may find a device that performs the same or better with current displays. But for now, I am thrilled with my Palm TX.

Great PDA With A Good Price.

With the exception of the color scheme, the Palm TX largely resembles the Palm Tungsten E2 and the Palm Tungsten T5 in design. Rather than the classic metallic silver chassis, the TX sports a chic midnight blue coloring that can easily pass as black. In addition, the solid-feeling PDA is sleek and compact in size and weight and should have no problem slipping into your bag or coat pocket. I got this in a package with the device a flip cover that attaches on the left spine to protect the screen and outer face from scratches, but if you want complete protection, I suggest you invest in a full-size case. Besides, once you take a look at the TX's gorgeous screen, I suspect you'll want to do everything to keep it that way. The price is worth ever penny you spend on this baby.

The Palm TX is well appointed in the features department. I must say they finally have wi-fi and blutooth. The TX is powered by a 312MHz Bulverde Intel processor and comes with 128MB of nonvolatile flash memory, 100MB of which is user-accessible. Not only is the amount of memory sufficient for copious numbers of contacts, appointments, and other PIM data, but you're also guarded from losing all your data if your PDA happens to run out of juice.

I love this so much, I bought one for all my kids and my wife. The performance is well on this unit and easy to use, I can go on with the specs, but you can look that up. I just want you to know, that this is worth your time and money. I will give you the pro's and con's and hope this helped you on making your choice to purchase this baby.

The good: The Palm TX comes with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a large, bright screen, and solid battery life. The sleek and compact PDA can also play back music. Which is a plus I must say.

The bad: Unfortunately, the Palm TX's battery is not user replaceable. Why I don't know.

The bottom line: The Palm TX offers a winning package of wireless connectivity, productivity tools, and fun for adults or teens. I have to say again, you will be very happy with this unit and for the price, you can't lose.

Palm TX

Looks like several of these Palm TX units are coming off some kind of lease service. The one I received was used (with visible scratches, including some on the screen) but has functioned well.

While I did not receive the one pictured, I did get a charging base with the unit, which was unexpected.

The Palm TX incorporates wireless 802.11B connectivity as well as BlueTooth in the same package size as the Palm E2. This permits internet connection at hots-pots. No G3 service fees! Full Mobile Email and Web support when you're in the right places (Been to a wireless equipped McDonalds lately?)

One thing I don't like is the need to buy a third party ($20) software package in order to play sound through a wireless Bluetooth headset. Since this unit boasts a music player, it's a remarkable design lapse.

Now dated, the unit is fully functional for any number of tasks - and many are becoming available below the $85 price level.

Palm TX used Review

Second largest Memory available 128mb on board. Can handle SD cards to 2-GB.
Built in wireless LAN. Not up to today's standards but it will conncet to free hotspots fine. No camera built in like the Zire 7X series but will display pics & video once you learn how to deal with its limited file support.
I primarily us PDA's as contact Databases ie phone book. And e-books. I do use the other functions too on occasion. The screen size is Second in size only to the iPhone and I estimate that to be only less then 5% more than the TX screen.
While it doesn't automatically rotate the screen I find the price more than worth the initial cost compared to either the iPhone or Palm Pre and I am not being sucked dry by some phone company. I mastered Grafitti dacades ago & find even the biggiest phone keyboard whofully inadequate for my fat fingers. Long life the Stylus!!! I was suprised to find the cradle lighting up when I plugged the power into it. Lights up the to a suprising degree at night. Practially a lamp. The built on screen cover is only mildly annoying but will definately protect the front of the unit well. When I had to replace my last Palm PDA, I seriously considered other maufacturers products. But between high prices, lack of availability & the rather Draconian attitude of you can only do it the way we will let you. I remain a dedicated Palm PDA user & the phone company can go to ... well you know where!

Great Palm for the price

I got one of these for $300 about a year and a half ago. I have used it constantly since then. It has everything anyone could ask for in a Palm and then some. My favorite uses are the Calendar, and the MP3 player. I have also used it to take notes, set tasks for myself, and surf the internet!

The WiFi connection is great and will connect fairly well. I have found the best reception to be when I am in the same room with the wireless router. After about 20 feet the reception drops off the chart. You can use it to connect to the internet, but there are only a few sites that are Palm friendly. One great feature is you can rotate the display 90 degrees, making many more sites viewable.

The display is the biggest one available in the Palm line. It is large enough to view a standard web page without scrolling side to side (when the display is rotated). Pics are lifelike in color. It can even play video, but I have had the most trouble adding video to it. It is not compatible with Media Player, which is a minus. Don't expect to load your latest music video and watch it. Maybe someone else knows how to do it, but it is beyond me.

The bluetooth is amazing. I bought an adapter for my PC and now I sync with the bluetooth, rather than the dongle (which quit working after about a year's use). I have taken pics with my RAZR and sent them to the Palm via bluetooth, looked at 'em with the pic viewer, sent 'em to my PC and printed them; all without a hitch.

The mp3 player that comes with the Palm is not all that good. However, for 20 bucks you can get the full featured player off of the internet and the sound is spectacular. With the upgraded player you can create equalizer settings for various types of music, as well as different environments. I plug it in to an adapter that plays through my radio, and the sound is as good as a CD! I also have noise cancelling headphones that enhance the music quality. I don't keep any songs on the Palm itself. I keep my songs on SD cards. Pop in a 2G SD card and you're good to go for hours.

Make sure you get screen protectors. They are fairly expensive, but indispensible. You will be writing on the screen constantly, and screen protectors will greatly extend the usability of the unit.

On the downside, the battery is not user replaceable, and here recently it has started to weaken. I haven't tried to have it repaired yet, since it is still good for about three hours of use. However, it used to last a lot longer.

Syncing with Outlook is one great feature. After I sync to Outlook, I then sync to my Yahoo calendar, and even if I don't have my Palm with me, I have all of my appointments on my home and office computers.

This is the third Palm I have owned and by far the best. I really don't need to upgrade to the latest LifeDrive, because this one is more than adequate. I have saved a bundle on MP3 players, flash drives, bulky calendars, easily misplaced address books, etc, because this one unit does it all.

Palm T|X

The operating system limits internet functionality, but wi-fi and bluetooth are both plusses. Accepts 2GB microSD (with adapter), won't accept high-capacity memory cards (HC). Nice screen, plays multimedia video and audio files. Extremely portable, but battery life is proportionate to its size. The unit has additional applications and functions I haven't explored. Used, unfamiliar item, provided my basic needs.Read full review...

Palm T/X The Good The Bad & The Ugly

I previously had an old Palm(Zire) that died on me & I never fixed/replaced. Decided to step up a notch w/more bells & whistles & got the Palm TX via ebay. Seller was great, all as promised.
THE BAD: It takes a short while to get use to how to roam around this guy & how it can work for you. But be patient & he will became your best sidekick. THE UGLY: actually has nothing to do w/the Palm itself, but for those whose OS is Vista. Vista is a pure pain in the #!! Palm TX IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH VISTA! Vista is a 64-bit Windows operation.
THE GOOD: THERE IS A WAY TO MAKE IT WORK! You must buy a Bluetooth 2.0 adaptor that can be used in your USB port. Make sure that when you search that the Bluetooth says it's compatible w/Vista. I bought an "Aluratek Bluetooth Wireless 2.0 USB Adaptor". Comes w/the install disk. Install the program. MY SUGGESTION FOR THOSE NON TECH SAVVY FOLKS, DO WHAT I DID: After installing the bluetooth program go to www.palm.com/chat This is a COMPLETELY FREE service provided online by Palm thru chat. All dialog is typed & no phone. They CAN link to your computer BUT can't open things. So they use a marker guide to draw on your desktop which takes you thru step by step instructions. They will stay with you no matter how long you need them & until you are up and running. The service at www.palm.com/chat can be used for ANY Palm product you have a problem with. So if you are thinking of getting a Palm device and your operating system is Vista keep www.palm.com/chat within reach.
