True widescreen and simple to use

I replaced a PV-GS12 with the PV-GS39 to get the widescreen. This one is easier to use because of the joystick control. Both have similar video quality but the pv-gs12 only had 680k pixels for 4:3 aspect ratio. This one has 800K pixels and gives you full widescreen at 16:9 aspect ratio (Ie, I got what I want). While this is not HD it works quite well in good light. Zoom is more than enough. On board light (and gain up function) help in low light. However, all small camcorders in this category (less than $500 new price) have this problem. It doesn't have an accessory shoe for additional lighting, but be creative in low light indoor/outdoor conditions. Panasonics also seem to hold up better and last awhile. If you want top results, you do have to spend the money and go HD for better results. However, for day time outdoor, this camera is really good and acceptable indoors.Read full review...

Very pleased with video and still capabilities..4 stars

Replaced defective Canon with the Panasonic Palmcorder Multicam PV-GS39 and couldn't be happier. Took it to Grand Canyon and got amazing still shots and great video. The "LIGHT" feature allowed the lense to absorb more natural light and produced pretty good quality in dark situations (where my old video would just give shadows). It is light weight and easy to use. Battery life is exceptional. Get one = you'll love it.Read full review...

Panasonic PV-GS39. Very good and very good value.

First, let me begin by saying that I have only used this for about 3 weeks. I am not going to give you one of those super-detailed and highly technical reviews. What I CAN tell you is that for the money (I paid $210 on eBay after being unwilling to wait in line for 10 hours the day after Thanksgiving like the guy I bought it from) this is an excellent camera. It is widescreen, so those who have recently purchased a widescreen TV will enjoy a true 16:9 aspect. It is very easy to use with a little joystick (it does not, as you might imagine, stick out very far. It's more like a joy-nub, really). Initial set up could almost be without even reviewing the manual - it's that intuitive. I was taping in no time.

The audio is exceptionally clear and seems to "zoom in" as you zoom in the camera. I was really impressed at how well it focused on the subject of the video. There is also a VERY useful front light. It made a big difference in how well the video turned out in poorly lit conditions.

The tape entry is a tight fit (as has been noted in other reviews I'd read) but it's a minor inconvenience, and I much prefer the small size of the camera. No big deal.

The little areas where connections must be made (DV, AC, etc) are not in teh easiest to access spots, but they're not often used so again it's no big deal. I also appreciate that the covers are attached in such a way that they won't easily be lost. They come out, but not OFF. Nice design.

Here are a few notes on the slightly negative side. It did not come with a DV cable to transfer the video into my Mac. You will need to purchase one seperately if you want to do this. On the camera said you will need a 4 pin DV, and check to see what your computer has as far as connections go. You CANNOT use a USB connection - it's too slow. Unless you're planning on just archiving Mini-DV tapes (an expensive proposition, as I see it) you will want to transfer your video over. Also, the GS39 can be used as a still camera...IF you have inserted a Memory Card. Again, this must be purchased seperately. It's not a big deal as prices have gotten lower and lower but after buying the DV cable and Memory Card I was out another $80. The camera does not come with a carrying case although it does come with a stylish (eyes rolling) shoulder strap. It's so small, however, that you'll want to think carefully about how you choose to carry it. Cases that are small enough are readily available, but I decided I didn't need all the extra little pockets and such that just add bulk. I'm still looking for the right - very small - case.

All in all, this camera is exactly what I wanted - for the money. I expect once the widescreen hi-def models get a little more reasonably priced I may go that route, but for around $200 this camera is a BARGAIN.

Great Camcorder for the price!

I bought this camcorder new for $159, an absolutely great price! It takes excellent video and good still photos. The battery that comes with it is ok, only lasts about an hour on full charge. I would suggest that you pick up a larger capacity battery on eBay for about $20 that lasts about 2.5 hours of continuous use, it does stick out farter than the OEM battery but lasts longer.

The size of this camcorder fits right into your hand and the controls are just a fingertip away.

This is a recommended buy!

Great buy!

We bought this to take video of our newborn daughter. It has been great so far. It's easy to use and comfortable to hold. If you are already familiar with how to use fire-wire and USB cords, it's also easy to hook up to the computer to upload the video. We haven't had any problems with it so far.Read full review...

Great bang for the buck

The optical zoom is quite excellent, and the camera is light and easy to use. I took it to a camping trip for myself and several people in my youth group and it worked very well.

Be sure the buy the extended battery, though. Even though its battery is one of the longest lasting batteries out there, it still has its limitations. :)Read full review...
