Solid Effort By Great White

Known mostly for the song "Once Bitten Twice Shy", Great White started out in the 80's and went unheard of for the most part following their big hit. They had a hit of a lesser degree with "Let's Call It Rock 'N Roll" off of Hooked, but other than that, we haven't heard too much mainstream from them. I've always thought that Great White was a good 80's band. I have the albums Once Bitten (which I think is their best effort), Twice Shy (which includes their biggest hit), and Hooked. Then came the underrated Psycho City, which I never even knew existed until recently when I was just surfing on Ebay one day. I got the album for less than $5.00, and what a bargain. It's a real solid effort from them. Like many bands of the 80's, Great White suffered from lack of promotion and were labeled a one hit wonder, although they had great songs that just weren't as popular as their big hit. It's kind of like Extreme with "More Than Words", they got cursed by their biggest hit.

Great White, though, has had numerous good songs. I enjoyed many songs off of Once Bitten including the classics "Lady Red Light" and "Rock Me" among others. Actually that whole album is pretty good, it didn't have any filler songs like their follow up "Twice Shy". Hooked was also a decent effort with "Let's Call It Rock 'N Roll" and "I Can't Shake It", but their popularity was declining. Then they released Psycho City (after a little heard of EP). I think this is their second best album only to Once Bitten, and it's too bad that they aren't recognized for their nice effort on this one. It has all the things that a great album should have. Every song is good, but because of the onslaught of the Seattle scene, grunge was in and the 80's bands were thrown by the wasteside. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy about the Seattle scene. I love Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam; but it's too bad that record companies didn't care enough about good music from solid musicians of the 80's to promote their solid efforts, like this one.

Released in 1992, Psycho City is my second favorite album from Great White, second only to Once Bitten. The title song song starts it off in rocking style, similar to "Rock Me", with slower verses that build up to the chorus. They keep it going with the rocking "Step On You". "Old Rose Motel" is a good bluesy rocker. "Love Is A Lie" is a nice ballad. "Big Goodbye" should've been another "Once Bitten Twice Shy", but that's the way it goes with record companies losing interest in bands. "Get On Home" is a good bluesy finale, that staples this as a truly great album for Great White. The rest of the songs are all good too, not decent, but good. There are no filler songs on this album. Psycho City is definitely one of the most underrated albums in recent memory, they didn't deserve getting thrown under the bus like all the other 80's bands (but then, neither did a lot of the other 80's bands). I fully appreciate the effort of Great White on Psycho City, too bad I appreciate it nearly 15 years after its release.

Best Great White album produced.

This is my favorite Great White album. At (or after depending on your POV) the tail end of the hair era, this album is the epitome of their sound. Mark Kendall plays with crunchy blues rock fervor while Jack Russell gives us his soul in songs like Old Rose Motel, and Love is a Lie. If you're looking for that feeling from the late eighties- look no further. This album gives it in spades.Read full review...

CD Recommended by Son

When my son asked about trying to find this particular CD for him, this was the first place I thought to try, and I wasn't disappointed in my purchase. A couple of the singles I've heard on their Greats Hits CD, but not the rest. I would recommend this CD to any Great White fan. The guitar rifts and the smooth tones of the music through out is just simply awesome.Read full review...
