Raid On Rommel

A very good, well acted movie with veteran actors of their day. Color is good and the story gripping if not a bit far fetched for anyone who knew the reality of the desert campaign against Rommel in WW2. Nevertheless we know in the end the British where triumphant in crushing the German Africa Corp. in the desert campaign. The movie holds your attention to the end and is very entertaining.Read full review...

Take your pick

This movie is a copy of the 1967 movie "Tobruk", starring Rock Hudson. It uses a lot of the same footage from that movie. They were both made by Universal. The plot is slightly reworked, but the story line is basically the same. I like Richard Burton in his action movies, so I have a slight bias, but I wish that this movie, didn't use so much of the footage from "Tobruk".Read full review...

Raid on Rommel (DVD, 1998)

A very average WWII movie starring Richard Burton as an Allied commando posing as a Nazi officer. His task is to pretend to be dying of heat exhaustion and intercept a German convoy heading for Tobruk. The Convoy is carrying British commando prisoners with whom he intends to link up and destroy Rommel's fuel storage dump in Tobruk. These storage tanks are built in a manner which makes bombing impossible. There is a lot of pretty good action footage sequences, although in typical British fashion, several scenes were borrowed from other movies. There are some great Naval battle scenes at the end of this movie. Overall this is an entertaining film, but sort of like watching reruns on TV.Read full review...

A fun Desert War Movie to Enjoy...

I have always enjoyed Richard Burton movies, and this is no exception to that enjoyment. The movie has a curious beginning in which solders that are already dead, are shot again and put into a armored vehicle. Driving this vehicle is Burton who pretends to be suffering from heat exhaustion. His plan: to intercept a small German convoy carrying the commando prisoners he is planning to link up with to eventually destroy the fuel and gun displacements in Tobruck. Things go wrong from the beginning when Burton is captured--according to plan, to only realize the commandoes are not in this convoy of prisoners.

The show progresses with Burton and the prisoners taking over the Germans and the convoy. The movie becomes interesting when they run into Rommel and get a chance to do some espionage behind the German's back. One of the scenes I especially enjoyed was hearing Ed Morrow on the radio during a night scene in the desert. Some of the scenes from this movie were duplicates from another one of my favorite's--Tobruck starring Rock Hudson.

Burton and the British prisoners accomplish there mission in destroying the fuel tanks Rommel has hidden and there is a particular exciting scene when the tank Burton uses gets knocked on its side. There is fire everywhere around the tank appearing to make Burton and his companions appeared trapped in the tank.

The ending of Raid on Rommel is somewhat less dramatic but still fun to watch if your into tanks and bombs going off. We get a good look at the British Naval guns firing and the German guns firing back. A good movie I recommend for someone not so serious for details of the movie and more into the entertainment of Burton and a shooting and bombs movie. The girl in the movie was fun to watch with her Italian demeanor. I particularly thought the role of Rommel was fun to watch.

One of the best movies about men and war . I saw on cable , and bought .

This is a great movie , well filmed and acted . what I liked most ,was the "OLD" REAL men will act like men ,even in war . I was hooked at the credits ,and remained so till the end . What an end ,mission went well, men emerged . I am very happy with this and would replace it at once if it was lost . I play war movies ALL DAY on appropriate holidays , this will be a favorite .Read full review...

Old but good action war movie

"Raid on Rommel" is a really good action film about the north Africa desert war in WWII. It's not a true story (although inspired by a true event) but it is quite entertaining. The actors did a fairly good job but the film is very dated -- even though this version is a newer release from 1998 on a North American DVD format. There's many major errors in it but just sit back and be entertained.Read full review...

Burton’s best.

I believe this war film revived Burton’s
film career. Well paced WW11 story about Brits behind enemy lines. Great desert scenery.

The movwe has a good action line, mostly all us hardware except for Rommels car. Although the story is fast moveing and lots of action. Some great shots of sea guns fireing on US ships at the near end of movie. the only thing that I didn't like was that I got a wide sreen version in sted of full screen.next time I will be watchful for that option. over all good movie.Read full review...
