River City in your hand.

First off, let me say I'm a huge fan of the original NES title. Also, let me admit that the cartridge I bought on ebay did not include the game manual. With that in mind, lets look at the Gameboy advance title.

The game starts off with a simple looking, yet clumsy start up menu. Without the manual, I'm actually sort of lost; looking at the unfamiliar options offered before the game starts: Allies:4? Enemies:4? What is that all about? Also, it would appear that if you wish to continue a previously played game, you have to manually load it at this point...I think. Also, if Ryan(or Alex) is fighting along side you, his stats must be loaded as well. At least I don't have to contend with a lengthy password.

Ok, so I start, and I find the enemies are much more evasive and cowardly than I remember from the original. The controls are just as odd, if not a little "squishier." Also, with the hit-detection being as touchy as it is, landing a running blow(my favorite way to quickly dispatch an oncoming enemy) is a rather difficult feat to perform. Also, this makes grinding a tedious prospect, as the enemies flee at the drop of a hat, taking with them their precious pocket-change. I also don't recall the weapons(trash cans, chains, tires)being as bouncy in the original; so that if you aren't careful, you'll kick up a loose weapon and do some damage to yourself accidentally.

Thats about all I have to say, since I really haven't had a chance to play through the entire game as of yet. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase, and when I get time and a decent dose of motivation, I'll play through it and maybe I'll experience the nostalgia that caused me to buy it in the first place.

Not Quite The Origional

This is an exellent remake of the side scrolling beat-em up for the NES.
If you havent played the origional, it's a side scrolling fighter in the same vien as games such as Double Dragon. However, it is a more humerous game and ups the ante with a progressive RPG style stats system.

This remakes provides a wealth of new features, such as additional moves, weapons and unlockable characters. However, something seems missing compared to the origional game. Unless you're a huge fan of the origional such as myself, I don't see most people getting the full experience out of the game.

Classic NES game

This version of RCR really took me back. When I was young, maybe 9 years old, my parents didn't want to dish out $40-50 on Double Dragon 2, so I instead picked RCR for $20, knowing absolutely nothing about the game. In hindsight, Double Dragon II turned out to be pretty lame & River City Ransom I would say was the best NES game outside of Super Mario 3! The things that stick out are the game play, the humorous little things the enemies say as they are taking an absolute beat-down from alex & ryan, and the way Alex stuffs food down his throat (plate & all) without the faintest sign of chewing...and he eats his drinks as well. Who can forget Alex's cartoon ass in the sauna? Hand's down a Top 3 NES game. Only downfall was this game was almost as short as it was sweet.Read full review...

It's better than you remember it being.

Perhaps I am a nostalgic old fool but to me River City Ransom EX is 32 bits of sheer awesomeness. One of my favourite old school nes games remade and, dare I say it, improved. Whenever I show these street punks the horror of javelin man and the speed of dragon kick I cannot help a grin forming on my face. From one ear to the other. With the inclusion of more moves and choices for editing characters this old gem shines anew. If ever I meet the people from Atlus I doubt much could stop me from delivering a great big hug of appreciation. Anyone picking this game up for the first time might wonder what the appeal is, I could understand that. If ever you played and loved the old nes title, this is the stone hand that will punch a fist full of joy right into your solar plexus, leaving nothing but shiny bouncing coins awaiting your deadly touch.Read full review...

Best game EVER made for NES

River city ransom is a game that broke ground, set standards and still is entertaining to this every day.
Alex an Ryan have to fight off the bullies to collect coins and save their girlfriend. Simple as can be, sounds a little like double dragon..... oh but it is so much more superior.
RCR is a completely interactive world where you can purchase books to learn how to fight better or buy some pound cake to power up, (shops are located thought out the game and all contain different items)all these options are available in stores you can walk in and out of at free will. If your feeling dirty feel free to stop in at the sauna and freshen up! (contains NES skin!)
Weapons include garbage cans, chains, baseballs and so much more!
There is no time limit so you can take all the time in the world to soak up the wholesome punchy goodness that is RIVER CITY RANSOM!!!

Just as expected

This is far better than the NES version, as expected of a polished remaster. Nothing was scratched or skipped, no errors or crashes either.
