Awesome Media Streamer

I've always enjoyed the Roku products. I purchased this one to replace the Roku 2, which was constantly overheating because it didn't have a cooling-fan. When it overheated, it would be hot to the touch and would prevent the movie titles from loading and cause latency.

I was pleased with how easy the Roku 4 was to set up, activate, and use. I love the easy-to-navigate user interface, features (voice search, remote finder, private listening via remote, private listening via mobile device), and overall quality!

The cooling-fan is somewhat loud and tends to run constantly (even when not being used), but it's significantly better than the Roku 2.

Not as excellent as I expected

It has more features than the roku express. The JBL earphones perform much better than I expected. 2 things disappointed me. Roku advertises that the remote provides being able to turn tv off and on. You were able to turn it on with the express, just not off, so you needed to use the tv remote. With the addition of volume control, I thought I wouldn’t have to use the tv remote at all. Well, the volume control works well.

This is my 2nd review. Now that I’ve had it for 6 weeks. Picture quality improvement upgrading from the Roku express is very good. Remote handling is very delicate. The JBL ear buds are excellent. Much, much better than I expected. Two major problems. The balance is off. More sound in the right channel, than the left. Can be very annoying. I don’t see any way to adjust it. I’m better off using the earbuds with the Roku app on my iPad. I can adjust the volume there. I’ve followed the instructions and can’t turn the tv off with the remote. I can turn it on, which I was able to with the express. I’ve have to use the tv remote to turn the tv off.

BEWARE: Batteries need to be replaced every 7-14 days, depending on how much you use the headphones with the remote.

Okay, but not a complete answer

I like the unit, but my goal was to have Kodi installed and learned later that you need an Android based device to install. The Roku will mirror content from Kodi on other devices, but it didn't work in my environment using two sources, so picked up a Firestick and installed Kodi and working great.

It is now installed in another room and does a great job for integrating my media server and apps such as TabloTV. Netflilx and Prime. If you don't plan on using Kodi or Android based apps, nice interface and works great.

Revie of Roku 4

I like the way Roku displays the programs on Netflix and Hulu Plus. The display outperforms the two WD steamer that I had. Unfortunately, the Roku 4 started making a very loud intermittent grinding sound about a week after I plugged it in. /The grinding noise is stilll intermittent! I did not keep the receipt (Who would expect a device as such would be defective a week later) and am now stuck with a noisy machine. I wrote Roku and interesting, I received a link for feed back on contacting Roku but never did receive a response about how to obtain warranty work. Very poor customer service Roku!!!Read full review...

Bad Product

The Roku 4 player has a problem which has gone from bad to bad bad bad bad

It started with the remote not working, then the HDMI connection was not recognized by the TV and each time to correct the problem you had to power cycle the Roku 4.

now the problem has progressed, before a simple power off and power on would let the remote start working for a limited time now a recycle does not even do that, it takes more than one power cycle

Each time in addition to the power cycles On the remote the batteries need to be removed then put them back in, do the pairing button LED on remote flashing, it takes several attempts to get it working

The problems with this specific unit are getting progressively worse because the steps to correct the problem have to be repeated several times

Two issues Remote and HDMI Losing recognition/connection with TV only reestablished by power cycle of Roku 4

HDMI cable 2.0 and Roku 3 has no problems maintain HDMI connection or the remote

Dealing with Roku Technical Support -

They have a hard time understanding english and they are noting but robots who go through a set of instructions to fix problems and when they give you a fix and it does not work they have you go through the same instructions again and when whats in their instructions does not work they crash and go to a supervision who is very reluctant to do anything that requires equipment replacement. They act like they are giving away the family jewles

I badgered them for replacement of the whole unit and they only agreeded to replace the remote to see if that fixes the problem. I think the % of the remote being the problem is less that 25%.

I have been waiting for the replacement now for 12 days they may be shipping it from Mongolia. They provide no tracking information so I do not know if it has been sent.

Bottom line Roku Technical support is a waste of time

I will wait 2 more days and if no progress has been made I will do a return with the seller

Convenient hub for online streaming content

This is the first streaming media player i have used...besides apps on a TV or DVD player. But this has been far superior to anything else i used before. It's easy to setup/use and some of the features that i didn't seem that important (to me), have proved useful, e.g., voice searching. The unit and interface are very responsive and i usually have little buffering.

My setup uses a 200 mb/s broadband, with the roku connected via wi-fi on a 5GHz band. The broadband was part of a bundle promotion that included the internet and a basic cable service plus a promo subscription to HBO and Showtime (so no added fees for those two).

There are a lot of Roku channels to choose from with a wide range of content (much of which is free). I have channels that require a subscription as well: TWCTV, HBO GO, Showtime GO, Hulu, Netflix, Beachbody on Demand, etc.

The key thing for me is that whether the content is with or without subscription costs, i have a single remote and access point for everything, there're even MIT Courseware (free) and Allrecipes channels.

I cut my other cable service and have gone to OTA antenna and Roku as my content sources. Hulu and OTA antenna are getting us all the current TV series content, while Netflix gets us all the past seasons we are interested in receiving. I have been more and more pleased as i continue using the system.

EXCELLENT DEVICE

Easy to set up, easy to use. Highly recommended to anyone who is looking for a way to avoid those expensive cable bills by streaming your favorite shows. You can't watch live but can watch your show the day after it's original airing. For those who can't do that I'd ask how did you ever manage to hang on for a whole week in the first place, a week and a day isn't that bad. :) We've reduced our monthly cable bill by over $100.00 here in Florida by using the Roku.Read full review...

Excellent for standard apps

This is an excellent solution for standard apps like YouTube and sling.
However not so easy to use with: TuneIn and screen mirroring.
Also, it is different from Chrome Cast, so you cannot send a video from your browser to the screen. This is the worst part...Read full review...
