Baz Luhrman's music version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is fantastic!

This version is perfect for students studying Romeo and Juliet, The language is exactly as Shakespeare wrote it, but with fabulous scenes and great music. The feud between two families becomes a gang war. The love story is beautifully done and the tragic ending is heartbreaking.

Over the past 5 centuries, it has been (and continues to be) performed in countless theatrical productions across the world: from multi-million dollar arena spectaculars to high school productions. Furthermore, in the last century, numerous film versions have also been created. Romeo and Juliet is so well known that even people who would declare they have never heard Shakespeare would likely recognise lines like "Oh Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" and phrases such as "a rose by any other name"...
It's a story that's been told and retold so many times it could have lost its impact (and many interpretations of it have done just that) but Baz Luhrman's will simply blow your mind.
The dialogue is still traditional Shakespearean English but that's where the familiarity with previous versions of Romeo and Juliet ends. Luhrman vision takes Shakespeare's centuries old words and story and hurls them into a post-modern world where the feuding families own rival mega-corporations, the Montague and Capulet boys form gangs who terrorise the streets of Verona in tricked-out hot-rods, engaging in violent shoot-outs if their paths cross (armed with guns with names like 'Long Sword' and 'Broad Sword'), where the Sycamore grove is a ruined proscenium arch on a desolate beach, where Mercutio hands out party-drugs and performs in drag... and yet, the love story, the purity, agony and ecstasy of Romeo and Juliet's tragic love, shines through the decadence, violence and hatred... like the delicate peal of a single bell heard within a maelstrom.
The film is visually gorgeous to behold, perfectly cast, brilliantly scored and, of course, magnificently written.
