Strong machine for its size

Easy to use once you get to see what this machine can do. However, the manual which comes with the machine, does not really answer any general questions. For instance, when I was ready to sew a sample fabric, I noticed that the needle was positioned to my left instead of in the middle. (The machine has a dial to set the needle position at either left, middle or right) Referring to the manual did not help me with how to return the needle position to middle. I had the stitch dialed in for "normal" stitch thinking that the position would move, but it did not. However, when I changed the dial to make another stitch, the needle position finally moved for that specific stitch.

Another concern I have is what stitch I'm to use for overlocking and the manual does not answer that question either.

Therefore, I am confused on the machine's operation so I'm just sewing my projects where the needle position sits, on the left side. Other than that, the machine works great!

Singer Sadness

I truly hesitate to write reviews at all, especially negative, but.... this machine (4411,4423, etc.) all seem to have the same problem, the plastic parts in the bobbin case will not hold up to the speed and power of this machine... it's quite sad as the speed and power are wonderful... it will go through anything... even heavy leather, but what good is it if I have to dissect the bobbin case every hour to nurse the machine into working again???

very sad ... I have been on the phone to Singer....to no avail... I switched to Janome.

Forget the Electronics , This Machine Sews Like a Dream

I had purchased a Singer Curvy back in March and had nthing but trouble with it. The upper tension was verey, very difficult to adjust. It had to be adjusted every time I sat down to sew, even on the same project. Singer company thought the timing might have been off as well...on a brand new machine?
So I sent it back and started searching for another "simpler" machine.
I have found it in the Singer 4423. It sewed beautifully the very first time. It is a fairly heavy machine and sems pretty durable. The threading of the upper thread makes it pretty obvious that the thread is in correctly...no sawing the thread through the tension discs here. I love that I can drop the feed dogs on this machine.
I am not an industrial sewer but I am looking forward to having many hassle free projects in the coming years.
I did find it cheaper on sale after it arrived but I am content.

Good Days and Bad Days

Overall, I am happy with this machine. Some days I seem to be plagued with problems, others not so much. The needle threader seems to have gotten out of whack, and only works some times. I have had several bobbin jams for some reason, that I do not understand. It definitely seems like it is built ruggedly, and has many nice features. Read full review...

Sturdy & works well (assembly was a little messy)

Some parts of the sewing machine were not assembled properly, so I had to partially take it apart and reassemble it before using the machine. Otherwise, everything came nicely. All accessories were in tact, and the seller was nice enough to send two bobbins charged with white thread. The machine itself is very powerful, and works well with multiple layers of knits.Read full review...

Love my Singer!!!

I'm not much of a sewer but at times need to make or fix something - if you can do it in a straight line I'm your girl! My mother was a beautiful seamstress (although I wish now I would have let her teach me something) and she bought me a Singer Sewing Machine for my birthday. I thought it was a really stupid gift for me but over the years I've grown to love it. We have a condo in SC and spend about half the year there and for some reason I always need a sewing machine there to fix or make something. I tried to get the same model as my old one, it's about 25 years old, but I think anyone who has one knows they never wearout. Anyway, this site showed different Singer models and all that they could do. I had purchased a couple of Brother Sewing Machines but they were all junk so after watching a few of the videos I purchased another Singer. I love it! It even has an automatic needle threader and sometimes I can even get it to work! I think they could have made the automatic threader just a little more user friendly and I would have given it five stars. I never have to worry about how heavy the material is to go through - it goes like a champ. Everyone should have one!Read full review...

present for my wife

the main reason I decided to go with this singer sewing machine is because of how it was built, which was a metal construction chassis, plus singer has a great reputation out the years of a adorable reliable sewing machine, even after I researched other brands and even looked at reviews even on YouTube my decision was easy. Nothing else could touch the Singer sewing machine and my wife loves itRead full review...

Lightweight, super easy to use

Was looking for an inexpensive heavy duty machine to replace a walking foot "Sailrite" look-alike that I bought off line that quit working. I have to say this Singer Heavy Duty 4423 is all it is said to be....lightweight, super easy to use, fast, powerful and has all the modern features one could want. I've used lots of home machines before and none compare to the versatility of this one. It will even sew sail and Sunbrella material with ease using #16 or #18 needle and UVR bonded nylon thread in straigt stitch or zig-zag mode, without a walking foot. Besides smooth, fast normal sewing, I sewed five layers of a heavy folded Sunbrella material without a problem. Can't say that for my other machines, including my walking foot "Sailrite" look-alike. With the automatic needle threader and the top loading, drop-in bobbin feature I couldn't be any happier that I bought this machine. In fact, eveything about this machine makes all my others obsolete. It is literally a joy to use.Read full review...

It's a great sewing machine for speed, if you can buy enough bobbins.

It was easy to learn about and thread. It's a lot faster than my older one.
My criticism would be about the little plastic door over the bobbin. I don't need to see the bobbin as much as I need that door to last. I sew a lot. That little piece of plastic isn't going to last like a metal one. Also, who sells a sewing machine with just 3 bobbins. Have you looked at colors of thread recently?Read full review...

Couldn’t be happier!

I received my new sewing machine three days earlier than expected and I was sewing within the hour! I LOVE this machine. The settings were easy to use and I got perfect results with my first trial stitch!
It was easy to thread and it was also easy to make a bobbin. The self threading worked, but I have no problem threading my own needle, so I’m not sure what I will end up doing most of the time. The self threader really is simple to use, but you do have to reach in and carefully pull a small loop that is created in order to finish the threading task.
The machine just feels so much more substantial than my 35 year old Singer. It definitely sews faster, as well.
As I said, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. In fact, my sister and I and our kids are giving one of these my our mom/grandmother for her upcoming birthday!

Glad I Bought It

I just got the machine today. It is as expected, and I believe I made a good investment. My reason for buying it is that I have a $1,000 machine which sews like a dream, but it cannot withstand constant sewing of draperies and other items that use heavy fabric. After a while it begins to jam and punctures the bobbin mechanism. It takes 2 to 3 wks. to repair at the shop, and then I get it back and in 2 wks. the same happens. I've been researching and find that expert mechanics will tell you that such a machine is being "abused" if you try to use it for heavy duty items constantly. It's not that you will break a needle or a part, you will break the machine. It will die. Well, I'm treating that baby with kid gloves. It sews beautifully as long as the fabrics are not too heavy.

I tried out the 4423 for a few hours. I am very experienced, so I believe I can judge the machine although I have not used it for very long. Yes, it's noisy, kind of "tinny" by comparison to my other machine. However, I paid so little for it on Ebay (new) that I can't expect it to perform like my very expensive model. What I appreciate the most is that it sure can handle heavy fabrics without hesitation. Any "regular" machine would die if it had to sew such materials and thicknesses. The stitching was beautiful without any hesitation on bumps. It uses the same kind of bobbins and needles as my other machine, so that's an advantage. You can buy them practically anywhere.

There are limitations, of course. Let's face it - you can't expect it to perform like an expensive industrial model either. It is made for home use...for the kind of sewing a homemaker would do, such as draperies, canvas totes, denims. I tried it on a pair of jeans that were to be re-fashioned. The machine sewed right over the belt loop folded edge without a hic-up. Like any other machine, it must be treated with care and respect. If you abuse it, you're going to have trouble.

I love this machine!
