INCREDIBLE MUSIC BUT A TRUE ENDURANCE CONTEST

Olivier Messiaen's sole opera is a marathon, grueling experience containing some of the most gorgeously ethereal music ever written as well as some of the most savagely grating. The performances all around are superb, but only devotees of the composer are likely to find this music enjoyable. The style is more avian than melodic and the entire work is woefully overlong. The whole opera is far too long. For myself the music was not very engaging, but tastes are different.
