Best of the best
The Munch-Boston collaboration on this recording is superb and the Symphony Hall Organ is unparalleled by anyother recording. Given the wonderful original recording engineering and this reworking for SACD and CD, the sound is even more powerful and detailed. No need to boost bass or raise listening levels where the organ is concerned, lest you damage your speakers. If you have good speakers and a good speaker set-up, the organ will fill the room with amazing, powerful, natural sound. No gimics here, just the real thing! The last movement is taken with a relatively fast tempo per Saint-Saens "instruction", but at a slower pace than just about any other recording I've heard. Conductors try to remain true to a composers intent with a certain amount of limited "plus or minus" interpretaion. Give Munch and the Boston credit for doing justice to this symphony. The Debussy and Ibert are wonderful couplings, although I would have preferred the Poulenc Concerto in G Minor for Organ, Strings and Timpani, using the same forces and benefits as the Saint-Saens.Read full review
