Sony MVC-FD91

I have a Sony MVC FD75 that I bought years ago. It still takes excellent photos. I like the Sony`s as the battery packs are rechargeable and last quite awhile. Only down fall with the FD91 is it is twice as heavy as the FD75. I use it mainly to take pictures of birds at the feeders in the yard. The FD75 only has a 10X zoom and the the FD91 has 14X so zooms in better. The floppy discs was the technology back when these cameras were manufactured. Very easy to upload images to the computer. The good and the bad on Mavica

I have owned a Mavica FD73 for a very long time. I bought it for personal use maybe 20 years ago and later had a job that took me around the US where I also used it in an industrial setting. I am also using it now for my eBay listings. It is extremely durable and reliable and I am so reliant on it I recently bought a backup FD-81. The FD-81 has sound and J-peg movie capability. The cameras are heavy, and bulky compared to new technology. They utilize 3.5 floppy drive technology which I believe is nearly extinct. They are also slow as they capture the image on the floppy drive. And typically will capture only between 20 - 30 images until the floppy is full. I originally purchased two batteries with the camera. One is dead and the other is questionable but Sony used this battery in many versions and they are still available. When used in very cold situations the battery will die quickly but will pick up by warming even in a pant pocket. Used they are typically a good value if you are still using a 3.5 floppy drive. Maybe even good for a child or grandchild just wanting to get started because they are so durable.Read full review...

My first digital camera... still going.

I have since upgraded to a newer camera but still use my old FD91. These are my experiences with my FD91. I originally purchased a FD81 but returned it to the store within the week when I originally bought mine. I liked having both the LCD and eyepiece for viewing (using the eyepiece also increases battery life for more shots).

It is a great camera for its time and still decent for today. Not exactly the greatest on megapixels (maxes out at 1024 x 768) but then again most family members don't want 5mb files in their email anyway... so this is a decent size for sending pics of the kids to family members who live out of town. Also good for taking quick shots generic eBay items. who really needs super high resolution of a hard drive your selling anyway?

The few drawbacks I have encountered over the years (most of them are slight).

Problem number one.... Batteries, I have gone thru several. They will start to go down at 10x speed even when showing a full charge after less than a year. I have had a batteries that after a little more than a years use will only take five or six pictures even when charged to full charge.

Problem number two... I had to take the floppy drive carriage and bend the prongs slightly to get it to recognize a floppy disk again after it started showing an error message a few years ago. I don't remember the specific error message but I tracked down others having the same problems on google and sure enough it started working again after the little bit of tweaking on the floppy carriage.

Problem number three... Back when I first bought the camera memory sticks were high on the other hand floppies were cheap and easy to find at any store. On my last trip to Pigeon Forge, TN I went to CVS, Walgreen's, and a Grocery store and wasn't able to find floppies anywhere. So the 3.5 floppy is starting to become a drawback if you need more and are on the road.

Overall though I if you can live with buying batteries about once a year or so and make sure your stocked up with plenty of floppies it is a good camera that lasts for years and works well for everyday shots. A good camera despite the outdated format & resoultion

I'm a fan of the Mavica cameras by Sony.I remember when this camera sold at The Wiz for over 800.00 and at that time I got the 0.35 megapixel 1st generation model,when this model arrived I wanted it so bad but held off.Then I had several of these cameras stolen from me so I picked up the MVC FD 91 on ebay about 2 years ago for about 125.00,the seller had a very good and honest description on the camera and it was spot on.When I recieved the camera it looked like brand new and functioned properly.I ended up selling the other 2 Mavicas,kept the MVC Fd 085 as a backup,but never had to use it.This camera was the top of the line back then and it's so easy to use on ebay for loading PICS..While 0.85 MGs is low and even 1.3 is low the camera is outstanding.To this day the camera is in excellent comdition,I have an extra battery,and it does the job commendably.Buyers must beware when you buy one of these cameras used,first they are over 10 years old,the repair cost is more than the cameras worth,and stock up on floppies.The MVC 95s 97s are even nicer but expect to pay double the cost compared to the MVC 91.Lots of bells and whistles,and I tend to take real good care of my gear.While it's large by todays standards it cannot be beat for use on EBAY to upload pics,even works well with my MAC computer as I got and external floppy drive to upload PICS on to EBAY...So the best things to do is ask lots of question regarding operation of this camera,if the answers are foggy look for another one.If you find a nice one highly recommended.Read full review...

ok battery life exelent, make sure you have at least 2 good batteries to swap on the charger. picture ok make sure you use max resolution when taking pics. get as close to your target as possible. be carefull not to review your pics unless your disk is full or you dont plan on taking any more pics on that disk. garunteed your disk will be ruined if you do. buy quality disks otherwise you find out just how good the cheap ones are. cheap=1-4 uses expensive up to 10 uses when formatting between uses. overall great camera. good pics. awsome battery life. highly recommended for comercial use. cant wait to try the cd writer version.Read full review...

What can I say I love using this camera sure I know (but it uses a floopy theres no memory card) yes it does only use a floopy. But it's just like the old pop out prints you watched come a live, except there are a few more steps to get it to paper. The screen on the back is big enough to let you know if it's a goofed shot or the video you just made is crud. Now THERE IS ONE THING THAT BUGS ME ABOUT it, you have to have excellent floopys no errors and such it will reject them like a bad tooth. Sellers taint the truth. Be careful

This is problably the best eBay camera ever made, BUT, every piece of electronics has a life cycle and so does this one! The Floppy drive and view screen are the two things that drop dead first and both will cost about $150.00 to repair.

I've bought many of these on eBay and returned a few because buyers 'fudge' on the truth.

If someosne says it was his eBay camera and has worked perfectly for 5 years, I wouldn't buy it. Simply put, 5 years of daily use has put it near the end if its life cycle!

If the seller says it is his, or his mothers, better chance it is in good working condition then one being sold by 'Johns Pawn Shop'.

Everyone leaves the stickers on, so that is not an indication. The two best ways of determinig use: 1 - check the 'anti glare' coating on the screen. Is it rubbed off, or basically 'intact'... rubbed off means that the screen has been taken out of the locked position and used for better viewing. Fingers touch the screen, removing the coating.

The second method is dirt inside the view finder. Obvious give a way as to where and how the camera was stored.

be careful when reading the reviews and don't overbid. This is not a $135.00 camera, even with the original box. The original box doesn't tell you how often the camera was used!

Sony Mavica MVC FD91

This is a very good camera to use for pictures on ebay.
Macro feature give you closeup detail.
14X optical zoom is stronger than most (Digital zoom is no substitution for optical)
Built in flash is a major +
Only drawback is the speed and capacity of the floppy disk.

Sony Mavica MVC FD91 0.85 Megapixel digital camera

We decided to buy this camera because we had seen some pictures taken with one and they were SO clear. We needed a new camera to take ebay pictures so we bid on one and won the bid. We like the pictures that it takes and we really like that it takes floppy disks. That makes it SO easy to use. The ONLY thing that we DON'T like is that it is a little slow. You can't take one picture right after another. It takes a couple of seconds before you can take another picture.
