you get what you pay for

i bought this as a gift for a friend who really wanted one of these combo's. I originally scoffed at the idea because when you combine things such as this along with all of the options that you have grown accustomed to, overall quality usually suffers. As it turns out this is the case here as well. At first they were ecstatic about having this dvd/vcr combo. The honeymoon was soon over after about a week, which surprised me that it only took a week before the problems began. One night when a couple of young kids were over they wanted to watch a movie & the one they chose was on vhs. They put in the tape excited to see their favorite animated classic & pushed play. Nothing. Pushed play again; still nothing. one of them said "how come I can hear it but not see any picture?" what they were hearing was the machine "eating" the tape. They tried to eject it with no luck; it was stuck! they then chose a dvd to watch. This wouldn't play at all. My guess is that if the player senses 1 format in the machine then it won't play the other until 1 of them is removed. if that is the case then that's really cheesy. I leave dvd's, cd's etc in my dual deck all of the time with no issues. Not this one, it refuses to do anything now. I guess that with vhs being phased out as is dvd in preferrence of blu-ray & digital download, quality control has gone by the wayside. Luckily for me i don't have a lot of $ stuck into this, the media in the machine that I can't get out cost more. I do like the way it looks. It's a very neat & straight forward design that's asthetically pleasing to the eye as these things go & being black & silver it fits with most of a/v components on the market today. In order to retrieve my vhs & also my dvd I have to either take it to a pro or take it apart myself with the risk I may run into a problem that I'm unable to repair but for what I paid, I'll take my chances. If i can't fix it along with retrieving my media then I'll buy another one to replace it with the caveat that you get what you pay for. If I do replace it I'm going back to separate components unless I'm able to find an Integra, B & O, Pioneer Elite or similar to the quality these manufacturers have in their products. Maybe even a philips since they did develope the tech for both dvd & vhs.Read full review...

Review of sylvania dvc850c

I am not able to get the tuner to work so I can not record shows. The VHS and the DVD work fine. Still trying to find a way to get the tuner working again. Not many repairs shops today, for this kind of equipment.Read full review...

Nice unit when it works right

The unit is ok but for some reason the vcr side doesn't play tapes in the correct speed. The tapes that don't play well on this vcr play perfect on my other units that are the same model as this unit. Also the vcr side doesn't hold tracking the tape. The dvd side seems to be ok.Read full review...

Broken port on VCR

The VCE was packed well in the carton, not damage indicated on the carton, but the "Out to TV" port was broken off. I sorted through the peanut packing inside the carton, but the broken off piece was not found.
With the port being broken off, the VCR is worthless. I am not able to connect to the tv.
Do I have any options?

Good product. Just be sure to get a remote.

When buying used, either make sure the remote is included, or find a remote that is known to be compatible with this model. (I first tried an RCA universal remote without success, then bought a compatible Sylvania remote separately on ebay for $16.) You will need a remote if you plan to navigate DVD menus, pause playback, program the VCR, view captions etc.Read full review...
