Tascam HD-P2 Digital Multi Track Recorder

I do classical music concert recording. This is the third one of these machines that I've owned. They are absolutely stone reliable, and the sonics are as close to "straight-wire" as you can get, along with the flexible feature set, especially at this price point. I don't use them with batteries, but if you do, they use standard AA batteries, not some expensive proprietary battery like the DR-100. Great stereo recorder!

I had a Tascam DA45HR DAT for years in my studio and due to tapes being hard to get decided to get a tape-less recorder. The HD-P2 records on compact flash cards and you have many options to dump the work into your system. The 24bit 192khz recording is awesome! For all you that think it's not necessary, that's fine but I'll still be enjoying the high resolution anyways. You're well into ultrasonic range with 192khz sample rate. I believe the top end goes to 80 or 90khz. Sound you don't hear as much as feel. I'm really enjoy working with this machine and think it's powerful and portable. I use outboard mic preamps with input and output transformers and the sound is very satisfying.Read full review

I'm using this to transfer DAT recordings to drive (by way of the CF in this unit), not for field recording - so I can't comment on the unit for that application.
