Tears of the Sun (DVD, 2003)

High energy action feature about a Seal Team rescue operation to protect and escort an American doctor in Nigeria. She is caring for refugees in that nation's civil war. A priest and several nuns and Dr. Kendricks are the only thing between the sick and injured and the rebel forces who are slaughtering everything in their path.

Lt. Waters (Willis), is the Seal Team leader. Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave the refugees and patients knowing that they will all be murdered. Willis and his team escort all that can walk to the extraction point and when they arrive, force Dr. Kendricks onto the helicopter and leave the refugees behind. Flying back over the hospital, they witness its destruction and subsequent slaughter of the priest, nuns, and refugees.

He and his men now have a change of attitude and return to lead the refugees toward the Cameroon border. With the rebels constantly on their trail, Willis realizes that there is a traitor in their midst. A constant running firefight across the countryside ensues culminating in a showdown just short of the border. Navy F-16's are called in and the rebels are killed, along with several Seals. Many others are wounded. The refugees are allowed to cross the border into Cameroon.

Cowboy the F@*K UP!!!

Tears of the Sun is definately a war movie, and another in a long line that rather portrays the military SF (Special Forces) in a light other than their obvious ability to commit quick and harsh violence unto the enemies of the US.

This movie has been called preachy and contrived, and even more so a great recruitment tool. I only somewhat agree. Yes it is preachy in some spots, but in it's "preachiness" it questions the viewers true outlook on the world. "It's not our war." is one of those outlooks. What would you do in a situation of mass and horrific genocide between tribes (often muslim vs. Christian)? What would you expect our armed forces or those that have the ability to stop it to do? This is the question that is asked, and asked often. Do you believe in a situation that is preventable to stand idly by and watch, or does it become "our war" because we have the ability to stop it?

The overall story is easy, and the action is intense. The characters though thin, do let you know enough about them to make you care about them pretty quickly. In a nutshell, a country falls into civil war and ethnic cleansing in Africa, and a SEAL squad is sent in to evacuate US citizens to saftey. A moral dilemma is foisted upon the SEALs and they choose to act rather than to stand by.

I recommend the movie in that you can simply enjoy it, and it makes you ask yourself questions in a very straightforward way. It is well done, the acting is pretty good, and the battle and political action very realistic.

I also recommend you watch the making of, and see what the actors and director have to say and why the movie was indeed made in the first place. I wouldn't simply call it an action or recruitment movie, I would call it a movie with a message that many don't want to think about whilst shopping at the mall.

Cry for Africa

Devastating portrayal of political turmoil in Africa. Not much sugar coating. Willis is good as the leader of a seal team sent into retrieve American citizens. The mission morphs from a simple extraction of high priority packages to an effort to remove a large group of refugees from the coming onslaught of the new governments troops.
Faced with on going genocide on all sides and orders not to become involved, Willis' character makes a believable decision to ignore those orders and engage terrorist troops who are raping and pillaging a village. No great soul searching just a simple thought process that says " Bad guys are killing innocents, I am an American fighting man whose every instinct is to fight evil, I'm Here, I can do something so here we go".
Much of this movie brought back uncomfortable memories and touched old emotions long buried. I thought the depiction of the Africans were spot on for the length of time they had to develop the characters.
Many of the Ricky Rangers out there will find tactical flaws and some amazing capabilities not known outside of hollywood. Some will criticize all forms of things military depicted. One must keep in mind that this was not a training film but a sincere effort to depict the Africa of today. An Africa invisible to the average American. An africa not concerned with global strategy or global markets but an Africa where the days are measured by the very personal human tragedies that mark the passing of each hour. An Africa where it does seem that God left a long time ago.
The fighting sequences in this movie are good for hollywood. The French doctor is a pain in the butt, just like real euro- do gooders who come to save Africa. Tom Skerrit is magnificent as Willis' CO
Buy this movie watch all the extras. And if you are so inclined remember Africa and her people in your prayers

Tears of the Sun (Special Edition),

Navy SEAL Lieutenant A.K. Waters and his elite squadron of tactical specialists are forced to choose between their duty and their humanity, between following orders by ignoring the conflict that surrounds them, or finding the courage to follow their conscience and protect a group of innocent refugees. When the democratic government of Nigeria collapses and the country is taken over by a ruthless military dictator, Waters, a fiercely loyal and hardened veteran is dispatched on a routine mission to retrieve a Doctors Without Borders physician, Dr. Lena Kendricks. Dr. Kendricks, an American citizen by marriage, is tending to the victims of the ongoing civil war at a Catholic mission in a remote village. When Waters arrives, however, Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave unless he promises to help deliver the villagers to political asylum at the nearby border. If they are left behind, they will be at the mercy of the enormous rebel army. Waters is under strict orders from his commanding officer Captain Bill Rhodes to remain disengaged from the conflict. But as he and his men witness the brutality of the rebels first-hand, they are won over to Dr. Kendricks' cause and place their lives at risk by agreeing to escort the villagers on a perilous trek through the dense jungle. As they move through the countryside on foot, Waters' team, experts at evasion and concealment, are inexplicably and ferociously pursued by an army of rebels. They are confounded until they discover that, among the refugees, is the sole survivor of the country's previous ruling family, whom the rebels have been ordered to eliminate at all costs. Waters and his small band of soldiers must weigh the life of one man against their own and the refugees they feel obliged to protect. If you like gritty, realistic action movies then this will not disappoint.Read full review...

A great combat movie that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat.

This movie is about a Navy SEAL team sent to the violent regions of Africa to rescue an American Catholic Doctor. During their mission the team engages ever increasing numbers of extreme hostiles who are out to kill the Doctor and the SEAL team. Bruce Willis portrays the Team leader who is a typically grizzled veteran Navy SEAL. During the mission the team is steadily reduced in numbers by the skinnies that have been chasing them over many miles and through some very serious jungle. The movie is an edge of the seat nail biting combat movie with not only superb special effects but is well acted. I have had the pleasure over many years in law enforcement to work and train several Ex SEALS and based on the ones that I have personally known, Willis should have been nominated for an academy award. I have bought and traded this movie 3 or 4 times since it made it to DVD and after the reported killing of Osama Bin Laden, I just had to have another Tears of the Sun DVD. The purchase of the movie was a good investment as far as I am concerned.

Many people have reported on numerous mistakes throughout the movie but, each and every mistake that was made was a very minor one and it really requires someone with way too much time on their hands to nit pick a movie such as this to the levels that it has been.

If you are a fan of the Die Hard movies, you will love this movie. If you are a Bruce Willis fan, you will love this movie. If you are a Navy SEAL fan, you will love this movie. It is entertaining, well acted and the storyline stays intact from the beginning to the end. Tears of the Sun beats the pants of the Rambo movies in realism and plot. This is a keeper.

Tears of the Sun

I LOVED this movie of true VALOR, SACRIFICE and LOVE for one's fellow beings!! I haven't seen such breathtaking VALOR in a movie, since the true story of Jesus of Nazareth (with Robert Powell), and King Henry V.with(Kenneth Branagh).!!

Here is the description off the site:
Movie Description
Lt. A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis) and his elite team of Navy SEALS have their work cut out for them when they are dispatched to war-torn Nigeria with orders to rescue an American citizen, Dr. Lena Kendricks (Monica Bellucci). The mission is pretty cut and dry except for one glitch: Dr. Kendricks will have to abandon the natives to whom she has been providing healthcare and those that work in the mission where her rudimentary hospital is located. Of course, Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave without her people, forcing Lt. Waters to choose between completing his orders as directed or putting the lives of his men on the line by helping the refugees cross the border to Cameroon on foot. To complicate matters, the group is being pursued by militant guerillas who destroy everything in their path. Willis is in top DIE HARD form as Lt. Waters, a touch-as-nails military man who confronts his conscience and makes decisions that surprise even him as he finds himself influenced by the stubborn Dr. Kendricks. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY), this film offers an enlightening and disturbing look at the conditions that permeate war-torn countries.

This movie amazed and touched me

Tears of the Sun amazed and touched me, and it will do the same to you!!!!

I'm not a huge war-movie fan, but Tears of the Sun is one of the Best War Dramas I've ever seen. It's the only war-movie in my collection and it's the only war-movie I was able to sit through without using the fast-forward button.

Bruce Willis is absolutely superb in this action/drama. Tears of the Sun grabs you by your heart and pulls you through the entire movie. It's emotional, intense, and full of heart.

Tears of the Sun is simply amazing. One of the best movies in 2003 hands down.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Rent or Buy?: Tears of the Sun is a must buy for any fan of movies at all. Whether you love war-movies or not, Tears of the Sun will end up as one of your favorites, guaranteed.
