The John Coltrane Quartet Plays...

The main reason for choosing this version of the cd was the following: this 1997 release contains one more song, and two alternate versions of Nature boy. Unfortunately the newly released version (in the Impluse Originals series) doesn't contain the mentioned songs, I don't really know why. The music which you can hear on this disc is mostly similar to the albums Live at Birdland and Crescent. It's not a real album, because these songs are a selection of recordings.Read full review...

The John Coltrane Quartet Plays...

Even though this batch of tunes feels sort of like filler (as opposed to something astounding on the level of "A Love Supreme") it's still filler of an outstandingly high quality. I'm not returning to it as often as say, "The Village Vanguard Master Takes", it's still very much a integral part of JC's 60's catalog.Read full review...
