Great book on under reported WWII campaigns

I had never really thought about the Allied campaign in North Africa in World War II. This book is an excellent tool to explain the importance of the victory in North Africa and the sacrifice, and frustrations the Allies had to deal with to finally remove the Nazis and Italians out of that continent. Atkinson won the Pulitzer Prize for this book and when you read it you will understand why. He is a story teller extraordinaire. Part poet, part journalist, part analyst, part historian, it all adds up to a very readable chapter of WWII history. It is remarkable how the reader can follow along with the characters on both sides. Atkinson uses excerpts from letters, diaries and veteran interviews to keep the story on a very human scale. The research and retelling of this battle is superb and I must mention the excellent battle maps. Like the title implies, America's army was 'birthed' in Africa, they experienced a fierce baptism of a bliinding dawn and survived to see the day break.Read full review...

An Army at Dawn

My actual reason for buying this book is that I wanted to learn more about the history of World War 2 in North Africa. I recently heard it discussed on a television program which brought it to my attention. At that time I planned to watch the movie "Casablanca" again, and thought it would make it more interesting to know the historical background for the story. However, I soon forgot my original reason and became absorbed in the book because it is so well written, providing such interesting details about the battles and people involved during that time period. Also, a family member was involved in that part of the war. I was only 8 years old when the war began, not fully comprehending what was taking place. Looking back on it, I find it fascinating to learn about why and how our country became involved, and the parts played by such leaders as Franklin Roosevelt, Churchill, Eisenhower, Patton and others.Read full review...

First rate historical of America's early WW2 involvement.

Thoroughly enjoyed this historical narrative on the early days of American military involvement in WW2 on the Western Front. Deeply researched, well written and extremely interesting information that expanded my knowledge of this not often explored area of American military operations in WW2.Read full review...
