Doris Day Rocks In This Movie About Kidnapping

Doris Day and Jimmy Stewart shine in this 1956 Alfred Hitchock movie as Jo and Dr. Benjamin Mc Kenna, who are on vacation in French Morocco with their young son Hank. When Hank accidentally bumps a Muslim woman and knocks off her berka, a French official saves the day. Louis Bernard, the Frenchman, promises to take them to dinner at a fabulous Moroccan restaurant and then stands them up. Then a strange British couple seems to be staring at them. There are some weird things going on in this strange country.

It only gets stranger when there is a disturbance in the street, and Louis Bernard collapses in Dr. Mc Kenna's arms, stabbed in the back with a dagger. Before he dies, he utters words about an assassination attempt of a government official named Ambrose Chappell. From there, the Mc Kennas life spirals out of control. They are questioned by the Moroccan police, their son is kidnapped, and the British couple who befriended them have left the country.

The mystery and suspense of the movie are typical Hitchcock. We are sitting on the edge of our seats many times. Doris Day, lovely and sedate in this movie, sings "Que Sera Sera" and we don't realize the impact that that song will make in the plot. (It also won the Oscar for Best Song that year.)

In a special feature to the DVD, we learn that Hitchcock and Stewart were good friends and that Hitchcock loved starring Stewart in his movies. He was in four: "Rope," "Vertigo," "Rear Window," and this one. Hitch also wanted Doris Day for the female lead, but she was opposed by the other members of the movie management team. Doris was already famous as a singer but had never played a dramatic lead. Hitchcock persisted, and she received rave reviews for this role. By the way, the character Jo Mc Kenna in the movie is a retired British version of Broadway artist, so it is essential that her character be able to sing.

You will enjoy this movie very much!

Hitchcock, Stewart, Day - A Winning Trio

As one expects from an Alfred Hitchcock movie, the story is excellent, with suspense, intrigue, and a touch of comedy. Doris Day shows great dramatic skill and proves she is more than just an amazing singer and dancer, though she does perform her signature song: "What Ever Will Be Will Be". No One could have played the lead as Jimmy Stewart does, he makes the unbelievable, believable. Overall, a mentally action packed thriller.Read full review...

Great color & widescreen version.

Just as I remembered it. I know this was a remake of an earlier version. But it's a definitive remake.

Counterfeit DVD, beware!

The item I was sold is a mislabeled counterfeit DVD. The description states that it contains the 1956 version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (with Doris Day and James Stewart). In reality, it is an amateurishly processed 1935 version (this version is currently in public domain).Read full review...
