Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - As Good As Advertised

this is one of the best CDs i've ever purchased. it is such and old CD by someone who didn't make many CDs (trust me, it was only by her choice) but it still makes people wonder when she is going to release another one. i will admit that there are maybe one or two good songs on the CD but the rest are great songs. there are plenty of classics and it is a very versatile album. it has a soulful R&B feel to it but she uses her talent very well to also make some soulful and meaningful rap songs. it is a CD with a lot to say about love, the music industry, family, etc. it is a must-have in ANY CD collection.

P.S. the first four are some of my favorite but you will love "Nothing Even Matters" (her duet with R&B artist D'Angelo). listen to the end for songs like "Tell Him" and "2 Good 2 B True." better yet just put the CD in and listen to it all the way through until you come back to track #1.

2.5 stars: Has not aged well at all since its official release, probably for the best anyway...

Oh man, the media hype machine sure was workin' OVERTIME for Lauryn Hill that '98 year (lol)! Bought a CD copy to see what all the fuss was about back then and...well let's just say it was a hard lesson learned in terms of what is deemed "popular" by the mainstream and what is actually good quality based on what your own ears tell you. Think the only tracks on 'Miseducation' that I was fine with were Ex-Factor, When It Hurts So Bad, Nothing Even Matters, and that bonus track Tell Him (only one I really enjoyed the most out of the four and it was a "bonus" extra, go figure). Rest of the material is just blatantly overproduced pretentiousness for the radio-friendly "Hip-Pop" market. Hill's singing is still mediocre at best (she was booed off stage at the Apollo early on in her career FOR GOOD REASON, folks) and her rap skills I was never all that impressed with. On top of that, she wound up getting sued by the very musicians she hired for her solo debut because she refused to properly credit them for their work! No wonder she ended up disappearing from the limelight not long after, serves her right.

You already have my "brutally" honest opinion on this Grammy-winning/multi-platinum album, so buy it at your own risk!

Lauryn Hill on Her Own & On Fire!

The key. It's the flow, the flavor and the personality of the album. This album is hip hop with a real soul with Strong and Dynamic words AND beats.

Her voice. Textured and smooth all at once, you can lend her your ear, without reservations.

Her words. The fact that she chooses to say something of substance versus anything to sell a record makes this album the kind that all types of music lovers will value for a long time. Plus, you don't have to shut it off when somebody you respect enters the room, its clean and still powerful.

Comparison. I wish there was more in this vien of music. And while this album (which is polished, well executed, hip-hop, but still honest) is completely different from her MTV unplugged album (which was raw, folksy, soulful, undone but honestly beautiful), they are both powerful bodies of work that get my praise!

Favorite tracks: Ex-Factor, When It Hurt So Bad, and I Used to Love Him. Perfect break up songs, put the album in, feel strong, be free and go on. Plus the two hidden tracks will leave you with hope that it can and will be better the next time around.

Great to play with... the Sun-roof back, windows down, shades on, and the tank full of gas. These are the rhythms that usher me into the a great vacation or at least a perfect moment of freedom.

This is still a classic, Enjoy!--MsJTRAVEL

Timeless

I bought this copy of Lauryn Hill's cd, which was released about 10 years ago, simply because I miss her style, her music, and her element from the music world. Not to mention that, back then, I had the cassette tape. lol. So, now I have the cd, which I can play anywhere. More importantly, her songs are like her father-in-law's (Bob Marley), timeless. And, to prove it, her album is still selling at virtually the same price as a new album. She had her moment, we had her and were captivated by her and her music, and somewhere along the lines, we lost her. Life happens. I just wish she was stronger mentally, spiritually, and emotionally to overcome the trials and tribulations that were thrown her way (mostly by her husband), and that she would get back on the music scene and reclaim her stance. All we really have of her is this one great solo album (plus her other songs with the Fugees). Listening to it, her music still strikes many chords within me. So, I'm glad I finally decided to buy it again. Bless up Lauryn!!Read full review...

Enlightening Music

This is a tremendous cd with great music, lyricism and depth. This lady can really sing, but is an excellent song writer as well. She deals with her subject matter with sincerity and a sense of responsibility that is lacking in today's mainstream music scene. I can certainly see why the accolades kept coming as it relates to this album. The interludes were very interesting and presented an different touch to the flow of the cd. Overall, the music is well produced and you can certainly see why Lauren Hill is considered one of the most influential artists in popular music today.Read full review...

Perfect Album

This is a cd that is very inspirational to me. You can listen to every track from the first to the last. You don't have to skip over songs to get to your favorite. You will enjoy just listening to every song until you get to the one you love the most. This is a very soothing album full of different vibes/beats/tones. No song sounds the same and you aren't caught up in some sob story. Lauryn Hill is a perfect artist. She raps, sings, writes, produces...she is amazing! I had this album when it first came out and played it so much it got so damaged. I had to purchase another...and am so glad I did! I will have a copy of this album for the rest of my life!Read full review...

I owned this CD many yrs ago. I played it so much. When I didn't play it my mom was playing it and eventually it became scratched. I finally replaced it. This CD was ground breaking and fresh! Not shocking that after all these years it still sounds wonderful. I love every song.I put the CD in and let it play until it stops! The X Factor. Zion.. Everything is everything are among my favorite songs but I love every single song. If you don;t have this in your collection you should get it. Its Lauren Hill at her best! She is a triple threat, who sings, raps, and acts! Gotta love Lauryn Hill! Can;t wait until she drops some new music for her fans!Read full review...
