Kubrick specifically shot his films in fullscreen, so they could be matted in theaters for widescreen and air on TV without cropping. Smart guy - but this has led to confusion on DVD releases of his films, which usually only feature the fullscreen version. The BEST Stanley Kubrick film of ALL TIME!

This is absolutly the BEST Stanley Kubrick film of ALL TIME! Jack Nicholson is EXCELLENT in his roll as the father. I really love the way that the film shows Jack Nicholson's character falls deeper and deeper into madness. Shelley Duvall also does an EXCELLENT job of playing the devoted, and later, terrified wife.

Additionally, the cinematography in the film is EXCELLENT in using various odd angles. Including some shots like the ones where the camera follows the son as he rides his Wheely down the halls of the hotel.Read full review...

Two Disc Special Edition

A film by my favorite filmmaker, based on a book by my favorite author, starring one of my favorite actors. That is what makes this one of my favorite films of all time.

This is a great dvd. The picture is clear. They did a great job. This is the widescreen version, enhanced for widescreen TVs. That means you get a full picture, but without the black spaces above and below. The sound quality on this edition is superb.

Disc 1 is the movie itself, and the theatrical trailer. There is also optional commentary by the guy who did most of the filming and a movie historian. great insight into Kubrick and the making of the film.

Disc 2 contains 4 documentaries, including a "making of" doc shot by Kubrick's daughter Vivian. There is also an optional commentary in which she tells a few stories about the film.

If you are a Kubrick fan, this is all great stuff. Unfortunately, there is nothing here for Stephen King fans. Even though this film is a masterpiece, King was unhappy with the changes made to the story. That's a shame because I think Kubrick captured the essence of the book even if he didn't follow it to the letter, so to speak.Read full review...

Good times are a'comin'

I can relate to Jack Nicholson's character. I like how you not quite sure if it is a ghost story, or mental illness on his part.
