My favourite book of all time.

One of the best books I've read. It's an easy read. Historical fiction. Written by Liza Dalby, the first Western Geisha and expert on Japanese culture.

I especially loved the incense and perfume competition! I thought it was so amazing that people collected natural ingredients, cured them and then had an ancient style "bake off" but with scents! Just such a fun idea that every part of one's appearance from robe, hair length and scents were taken so seriously + had so much meaning.

I loved that it details the introduction of tea by the Chinese into Japan, the reaction of the Japanese to meeting the Chinese and Korean traders in the 11th century.

It's all so interesting both historically as well as the personal stories of the main characters.

There's a lot of sadness and grief. But it's in no way a downer book as it's balanced by beautiful observations of the natural world and humanity.

There's a lot of empathy and character growth too. Really, really just a great book.
