Good, with some issues.

When The West Wing series moved from Netflix to HBO, I was bummed because I didn't want to have to pay for, yet, another streaming service and I knew I would miss it. Which is why I looked for a complete box set at a reasonable price. This is a great set in pretty good condition, except for some of the episodes that refuse to play because the DVD has some scratches. There was, of course, no way to check each DVD before purchasing and to be honest, I doubt that even examining each individual DVD I would have noticed the scratches, as minute as they are. I tried cleaning the DVD, tried it in two different players and it refused to play a couple of episodes.

Unfortunately, one of the episodes that refused to start was "Two Cathedrals" at the end of Season Two. Anyone familiar with the series would note that this was one of the most important episodes of the entire series! Fortunately, we had the complete season on another set of DVDs and were able to watch the episode from that.

Another episode in Season Three (which is as far as we've gotten going through the series on this boxed set) didn't play, so now I'm worried that this is going to be something that happens again and again.

Other than that, the set is in pretty good condition. The special box is in pretty good shape, as are the "file folders" that hold each season.

Unless buying a brand-new boxed set, I don't know how one could avoid getting the occasional scratched one. Caveat emptor.

Great show, lousy package

Like many others, I watched The West Wing when it was on TV and bought my own discs. Eventually sold my discs (bad move...)
The show itself is GREAT! This particular package deal is not.
Recently my hubby, who had seen the show, noticed it on HBOmax and wanted to watch it. We watched several episodes and I decided to rebuy the discs. I purchased the file box edition and came up with several problems mentioned on this page. Some discs had english sub-titles, some only French and Spanish. One disc would not play at all on two of my three players and the last disc of the series would not load at all. Seems a common complaint here with this particular package.
The file box collection is kinda cool with a copy of the initial first episode script and another booklet that gives a synopsis of each episode for ez reference.
I have repurchased a replacement of regular discs and, hopefully, will not have issues. I have noticed that I need to change the synchronization of the audio.

Packaging: A; Disc Format: A++!

The packaging for the West Wing Complete Series Collection is nothing short of beautiful. The DVDs are stored in tri-fold pieces of glossy cardboard, which are meant to resemble file folders, and organized by season. While this presents a nice appearance, the discs can get scuffed when removing and replacing the DVDs from the folder. You will want to be extra careful, although, I've found that no matter how careful you are, scuffs are just going to happen. The folders are protected from the weight of the lid by a clear plastic space filler, which helps to ensure the integrity of the tabs on the folders.

As for the DVDs themselves, Warner Bros. did an excellent job of ensuring the menus are uniform throughout the entire series, as well as re-pressing the DVDs into single-sided discs (as opposed to the double-sided discs used in the individual season releases) with uniform disc art on all 45 DVDs. For those who are as particular about their DVD collections as I am, the single-sided discs alone make this a worthwhile investment for anyone who is interested in collecting the entire series. However, remember that beneath the surface of the discs and their new artwork, lie the exact same discs found on the individual season releases. There is no new content for the Complete Series Collection. There is, however, a nice booklet included with episode synopsis and air date information, as well as a reprinted copy of the script for the pilot episode.

Overall, I give the West Wing: Complete Series Collection 4 out of 5 stars. It excels above most other complete series collections I've seen with its only major downfall being lack of additional special content and the tendency for the discs to scuff from the hard cardboard folders.

New or not?

This set was described as new and maybe it was maybe it wasn't. It was wrapped in what appeared to be factory type plastic, though the blue box had some appherent wear, the discs were in some kind of wierd plastic bags inside the slots of the packaging. The inner packaging (the folders that held the discs) was meant to look like some file folders in a file cabinet, but instead of being straight and new looking they were kind of bent and disheveled, and some of the discs had smears or possibly fingerprints on them... whatever it was, the discs were not completely pristine. The discs have played well except for an occasional digital pixelation and some audio gaps, this may or may not have anything to do with the disc, I cannot be sure. It was also a little fishy to me that this set came without one single piece of printed literature. I would be leary about buying something like this again from an auction site but I did get it for less than half the price offered at a national chain.Read full review...

west wing

I bought the whole series of west wing from ebay. It was months before I discovered it was possibly a fake. One episode skipped but in general they all played well and have subtitles if needed in various languages. It's packaged in a red box and the disks look original. One series looks a bit thrown together. I watched them all in sequence. It took several months. Perhaps I am wrong and it isn't a fake. Anyhow I paid about £50 before postage, so I cannot complain. Series 7 was thrown together by producers and did not ring true. Enjoyable nonsense though. I am glad I did not pay more. I was hoping to resell on ebay later in the year. What should I do? It is possible to watch 1 DVD per night which is 4 episodes, because the adverts are missing. Producer's directory doesnt appear to work though. Does anyone know why that is?
They seem to run out of ideas quickly and the first three series are excellent. When the original writer left, he took most of the ideas with him!
i have now replaced the missing disc with an original and sorted out any problems. It is now a year later and all in all I am pleased to have bought the item. I wont try to resell on EBAY in case it is a pirated copy. Might even watch it again!

The West Wing Compelete Series, DVD

This compalete 45-DVD set of the award-winning television series, THE WEST WING, remains the "Best Value" of anything I have ever purchased on eBay during the ten years that I have been a member.

Nothing I have ever purchased on eBay has given more pleasure, more quality enjoyment, for so long for so little cost.

At a total initial cost of around $100.00 posptaid, that computes to about $2.00 per DVD disc...and with (conservatively) two hours of viewing time per disc of several series' episodes, that's about $1.00 an hour for quality entertaiment.

And, figuring that my family and I will probably watch the entire series maybe four times during the next five years of so, the "Net Cost" is about 25-cents and hour. Now, is that great value or not?

My wife and I find withn these 45 DVD discs...superior writing, phenomenal cinematography, world-class acting and intricate story lines that need to be viewed several times to catch all the innuendos, play on words and little "leaks" of stories that will be revisited in future episodes: "Oh, yea! Now I get it! Remember back in Episode Three, they actors said something like this might happen someday...now here it is! How clever!"

Rabid professional political advisers may arguably be able to knit-pick the ultra-fine factual errors in many of these story plots, but the real drama of "what life must be like in the White House" brings common folk like me light-years ahead in our understanding of the complexity of national and international politics and diplomacy. And that's a very cheap education for only 25-cents and hour! It's almost like getting a degree in Political Science for only $100!

Perhaps it is the lack of consumers' well-documented lack of interest in politics that keeps this 45-DVD disc set of THE WEST WING priced so low. I am still trying to complete my DVD series of NORTHERN EXPOSURE...but at more than $20.00 per disc, my programn series remains woefully limited.

In summary, the 45-DVD disc complete series of THE WEST WING remains one of the best values you will find in the rapidly-expanding world of eBay.

I encourage you to take advantage of this cheap education.

After you view the entire series, if you don;t enjoy it as much as I did, simply list your "used" DVD set on eBay and sell it for $50 or so. That will reduce your cost of viewing still lower to 10-cents and hour or so!

What are you waitng for? Buy It Now! It's a No-Brainer!

Favorite TV series for all time

My all time favorite show. Now that Netflix removed it this was the perfect option so I can again watch the entire series every Presidential election year. But am very unhappy I can't stream it. Maybe aimed again.Read full review...

Inside the Whitehouse and the occupants who work and live there.

I had watched a few episodes of West Wing on TV but was unable to watch it all. I was impressed with what I saw and decided to buy the entire series when it came out. The set I purchased from Ebay was great and sold at a very affordable price. The show was up-to-date as far as political issues and really gets down to the nitty-gritty of running for high political office in this country. The phrase "if you want a friend in Wasington, get a dog" rings true. The show also brought to light the very true fact that a candidate's staff can make him or break him. The killing schedule required to run for office makes one wonder how any marriages survive in this crazy atmosphere. The writing was accurate and the complete cast were all really outstanding. The main thing I took away from this series was that we had better be very sure that the top man is exceptionally strong and sure of his decisions made after hearing from upteen people telling him what he should do. The bottom line falls to him. I enjoyed the entire show. The dialogue was very witty and funny at times, and seemed to flesh out and define all the characters. There is no doubt that power corrupts and some politicians, not all, are very prone to corruption and fall in love with power. Comparison shopping revealed that I got the best buy offered. Thank you Ebay.Read full review...

Sorkin's lament

This is entertaining, and the characters are engaging. That said it is rather polemic: it seems that Mr. Sorkin has little hope for the world, and less for the government. By comparison the Danish equivalent Borgen is much less hopeless.

This is no indictment of the seller: the purchase went perfectly.

One of the Best!

I remembered this show when it was on and thought it would be a great way to educate my wife on the workings of the White House and Capital Hill. Even 15 years later, a lot of the story lines, dealings, characters, and political tensions rang very true. The acting was terrific, and it's interesting to see actors who have moved on to other roles. There are a LOT of shows here - 9 seasons and a lot of episodes in each season - it took us 3 years of watching "now and then" to get through them all. Buy it, enjoy it, and learn a little!Read full review...
