Songs:superb, Liners: excellent, mastering: dreadful

If ever a band made singles that deceived an audience about their true musical identity, it was The GW.
They made smart, sarcastic, oddball rock n' roll that had nothing at all in common with ( admittedly excellent ) pop singles like "These Eyes", "Laughing" and "Clap For The Wolfman". If you didn't care for those nuggets, you owe it to yourself to hear the full length albums. But I digress...

As someone who is a fanatic about his band, I am more than disappointed in this double CD set.
I don't think any band with six gold and four platinum records can be represented well on two CD's.
They also could have contained a couple more songs, but more would not have been not better, here, anyway, considering the sound quality, which is a step above "wretched". Naaahh..it is just plain wretched. IMHO, this is the most poorly mastered collection by a major classic rock band on a major label that I have ever heard, and I own about 3,000 CD's. I own everything they have ever done, including the wonderful three-cd "Ultimate Collection" CD, but I bought this for $4.00 to read the interviews in the liners and to hear how it compares with other releases of these great songs.
I own 2-3 different releases of 3-4 or or their albums; that's how dedicated a fan I am.

I am a musician and recording producer. I compared six songs that appear on this set, the "UC" set and at least one studio album. The mastering here is thin, midrange heavy and noisy. It makes these great tunes sound like they are coming from an old transistor radio. No less an authority than Guess Who singer and primary songwriter Burton Cummings has disowned this collection on his MySpace blog. That should tell you something.

Anyway, true Guess Who fans should really, really get the original studio albums..all 13 of them...and if you can't, then PLEASE blow this set off and get "The Ultimate Collection", also on the RCA ( now BMG ) label.
