Great replacement keyboard for MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and others.

I recently began having considerable problem (not a liquid spill) with my MacBook Pro, specifically the "u"key was not responsive unless I pressed down hard on the key, then it began deteriorating to the point that it would take several presses to extract a single "u" out it, then it began repeating. Then the "i" key and "o" keys began having the same problems.

After taking off the key-caps and cleaning, it became apparent that the contacts in these keys were failing and the keyboard needed to be replaced. I found this keyboard (exact replacement, excellent price, and free shipping) and promptly ordered it.

It is very important that you also purchase the screw kit because the factory original keyboard is riveted to the case. Each rivet (and there are many of them, basically at the corners of every key, need to be carefully removed (popped out with the edge of a sharp small screwdriver. I found that drilling off the rivet's lip (with a 3mm drill bit) will leave enough of a stub of the rivet letting me grab it with an tiny diagonal cutter and pry them out. There are some useful youtube videos on how to do the keyboard replacement (watch them). Make certain there are no pieces of rivet left inside the chassis (use a vacuum). Once all the rivets are removed and the new keyboard installed, the screw kit provides plenty of tiny screws to go into every rivet hole (each hole that had a rivet is actually a threaded hole so the screws go right in. Don't over tighten these screws as they can be easily stripped, use just enough torque to snug the screw down.

You must first remove many delicate parts including the logic board, speaker assemblies, and several tiny connectors. The most delicate part to deal with is the keyboard backlight membrane, which must be gently peeled of in order to expose the keyboard and it's rivets. This membrane is made of a foil/mylar with foil tape around the entire perimeter that must be peeled up to allow the membrane to be removed.

Once you can see the rivets, the operation of removing each rivet requires a lot of patience and care, but it is very do-able. After all the rivets are removed, then the keyboard can be removed and the new keyboard installed. This is considered an "advanced operation" however if you are technically inclined and a steady hand, you can do it.

It took me approximately 3 hours to complete the entire replacement (I didn't rush any part of this). As a reference, I have an electrical engineering background and have disassembled/assembled many computers over 35 years, so I have a lot of experience.

While there are many steps, lots of tiny/delicate parts and screws, that all need to get reassembled exactly as they came out, if you take your time and keep all parts and various-size screws organized as you remove them, and possess the basic mechanical tools (especially for the removal of the rivets) then you should be able to accomplish this replacement pretty easily.

I am writing this review using my newly replaced keyboard (as a proof-point), hence any spelling errors are my own and not the keyboarduuuuuuuuuuuuuu (haha just kidding).

Good luck

Great replacement keyboard for ibook

Not too hard to replace if you are ok taking apart things. Biggest thing is making sure you put the correct screws back where they came from ;-) look on youtube for step-by-step. Pretty easy.
