It worked with cylinder head on

I cross threaded a spark hole on my old golf this worked well even though I kept the cylinder head on. It cuts a 16mm threaded hole and a 14mm x 1.25 for the plug.

The tap is OK, I had to be careful to get it started though. It lacks the 14mm starter thread you may find on a professional tool.

Be careful with swarf if leaving cylinder head on. Put lots of grease on the tap to catch it and make multiple passes. Leave the spark plug out and crank the engine over for a second or two once finished to blow any remaining swarf out.

The reamer tap good, but theaded insert seems to have limited life

Reamer worked fine on aluminium cylinder head (lawnmower). However the threaded insert has started deteriorating after plug has been removed and replaced a few times - now difficult to hold plug in the insert threads. Probably OK as a one off replacement, but you may need better quality Helicoil solution as a permanent fixture.Read full review...

Chainsaw cylinder head spark plug hole.

Like most things do your homework, the plug hole needs drilling to the correct size and also you need to make sure your insert is spot on so you may have to machine it to give a better fit, don't forget the collar as it will change the depth of your spark plug so it has to be recessed, when finished clean thoroughly and use spark plug to fit insert with lock tite..Read full review...

An effective repair after a fair amount of effort

I hesitated to buy this as the price is quite low and the were no instructions on line nor could I understand how it could work without a pilot drill, but it was for an otherwise dead lawnmower engine so I gave it a try

The tool comes without instructions. I initially tried to use it with the head in place but was unable to apply enough pressure to cut a thread, so I took the head off and clamped it to a workbench. Essentially the tap wears away a cone shaped entry until eventually it starts to cut a thread. It took me around 30 minutes with a lot of pressure to complete, but the thread was apparently very clean and took an insert which I fixed with Loctite easily.

The start cutters on the tap showed considerable wear so I’m not sure how great a life it will have but I’d guess it would be good for 3 or 4 more threads if need be

Too soon to tell about insert life but I will use some anti seize to protect this – the plug may never need to come out again in the life of the engine

Spark plug re- thread

Very simple to use , just make sure the die is straight in the hole , and then just use like a normal die. Different lengths of inserts are helpful. After retaping the bore I simply screwed the insert into the spark plug and then into the new threaded hole. Simple. Read full review...

Popped spark plug? This fixes the issue!

Great item, simple to use and follow the you tube advice. I fixed pot 3 on my mini cooper S with this, took about 20 mins. Take care and make sure its straight, but an easy and effective fix for a common problem. Read full review...

Not good value

First, some instructions would help a lot, either in the package, or online

Second, the tool seems to be designed to enlarge the threaded hole at the same time as cutting new threads for the spark plug insert

It would be better if it worked in several stages, with separate tools for each stage

Finally, I'm pleased that I made some test pieces to practice with before using it on the cylinder head. It effectively destroyed the test pieces.

Car engine repair

Used this to repair a previously repaired plug thread (with helicoil) in a fully assembled RS2000 engine (alloy head).
Wasn't aware that someone had tried to previously repair the thread so initially tried a thread chaser... this dragged out the old helicoil.
Very easy to use and fit new insert despite plug threads being recessed inside cylinder head.
Was concerned about swarf dropping into the cylinder but put plenty of grease on the tap. Also put the piston at TDC and used an air gun with long nozzle inserted plug hole to blast any debris clear after spraying with brake cleaner.
Has a much more positive feel to the insert than a helicoil. Screwed the spark plug onto the insert first to fit, loctite on the insert and copper slip on the plug thread.
Was a little uncertain how much grunt to give on tightening but just used the same criteria for fitting a new plug.
All good so far but haven't had the need to remove the plug yet! Time will tell.

Lawn mower repair

Seems to have worked fine. You should have some threading/tapping experience & adopt care or at least some DIY skills. Would be easy to mess it up.

Half the kit

As the title says. If you want to do the job with some accuracy and skill. There are more tools required and a better type of duel threaded tap needed.
If you have the bigger kit then this is a great parts top up for it
