USB External GPS Self Contained Unit

I really purchased this USB GPS receiver as a last resort due to Dell being no help in getting my built in GPS unit working on my Rugged Extreme Laptop.

I installed the software and plugged in the USB GPS and went to y program that uses GPS "National Geographic TOPO!" and began playing with the com ports and baud rates as recommended in the instructions. I was able to use the GPS even in my living room, worked perfect.

A couple of days later I was playing around with the device configuration setup on my laptop and I noticed that COM 4 said GPS and my USB GPS was not plugged in.

I once again went to my mapping software and set the GPS to COM 4 and started selecting BAUD Rates one at a time and testing the GPS at each different setting. When I het 35,400 the thing came alive with the GPS in my Laptop which is what I wanted all along, but Now I have the option of an external GPS should I need a remote receiver.

The GPS in my laptop installed within my laptop is the same manufacturer of the USB UPS I purchased.

The price was certainly very reasonable. I wish I would have just purchased this GPS from the start instead of wasting a few hours talking with Del Help. Dell was telling me I needed to purchase and install a Broadband card and have it installed in my Laptop to get my GPS working.

Yes I like the USB GPS and I would purchase it again but I am really happy that the software somehow connected with my Rugged Extreme Laptop built in GPS.

The real test will start next week

I've had a lot of laptop problems since windows 10 started, one of which was the GPS reception. After our spring RV trip where it was useless, I contacted DeLorme and was informed that the problem may have been the old receiver (BU-353). So I ordered the new BU-353S4.
Connecting it was a very time consuming problem since I kept getting the message "can't open the specified port". Finally I printed out 15 pages of instructions from the mfgr, followed them very closely, and then got the receiver to appear operational. Then I had to plot a map route around our neighborhood, get my wife to drive it while I confirmed that it was receiving sattelite signals and informing us of upcoming turns. So it seems operational. But next week we'll be leaving on a 2000 mile RV trip thru lots of back roads. That will be the real test.

On the three questions above I had to choose between yes or no when I would have said maybe or not sure.

One powerful puck

Great satellite receiver. With its fifteen feet of wire I can sit in the salon of my sailboat and navigate in comfort. It picks up plenty of satellites and you don't have to worry about rain or saltwater getting on it either. Great tool for any boat owner or any type of travelling.Read full review...

Compact and very responsive.

I received the BU-353S4 receiver today. It took a little while to set-up on my Windows 7 laptop. Once I followed the instructions and got it to work I was and am totally amazed at how quickly it hooks up and how many satellites are available to this unit. I run MS Streets and Trips, the old receiver would take up to 3 hours to hook up the first time in the day. Then it would drop the signal at random times through out the day, AND, take up to a half hour to come back. Very annoying when you get close to the customer and don't have tracking.
In the blink of an eye your hooked up with the BU-353S4. The most impressive part so far is that I can hook up to satellite tracking "in my basement". I have not taken this unit on a trip yet, but, if it works half as good out in the real world as it does in my home, IT'S A WINNER. The following picture is the signal strength from in my basement.

It is now a couple of weeks and 4000 miles later. This GPS receiver works flawlessly. The MS Streets and Trips has never before tracked as close as it does now. Morning start ups are a few seconds, every morning, vs. minutes and sometimes an hour with the old reciever.

Affordable GPS antenna for easy do it yourself navigation

I used this model to sail across Lake Michigan just two weeks ago and it helped guide us over 90 miles to within a hundred yards of our harbor entrance through rain, fog and dark of night.

I used it with open source navigation software (OpenCPN) which worked perfectly with the antenna once I read that you had to shut down the GPS utility app before launching your navigation software.

The antenna also drew power when my laptop was closed so I it was ready to plot our position as soon as I opened the laptop and logged in. I look forward to using it for years to come

Multi-configurable

Can be configured for many applications and many speeds. We used it inside an RV and it didn't need to be out in the sun or on top of the cab. It worked in the cab and found it's targets immediately. It's got a magnetic base and a suction cup. If I'd have known all this when I bought it the decision would have been much easier to get it.Read full review...

Load SW and Plug It In -- Done

The software may be a little lacking, but it installed easily. Next the GPS itself plugged into a USB port. I started the SW, and it was already configured to use the right "COM Port." It immediately began to narrow down where it was and set the time. This was in the middle of my house where the TomTom would not work -- this did!Read full review...
