Soul and pop of the present day

This album reminded me of albums froms decades past that only had 9 or so songs, and still managed to be killer, such as Michael Jackson's "Thriller", Billy Joel's "The Stranger", etc. This album isn't perfect, but it's damn good! There are some really funky tracks here, and he seems to be showcasing his voice a bit more freely here than on the first record. I was torn with his debut, because it seemed like this cross between grown man R&B/soul, and light hearted kid friendly pop songs. Well, he's let loose the grown man side fully here and without restraint, which is nice to see, and he does it while paying homage to some really funky genre styles.

Young Girls is probably my favorite song. The record is bright with a strong chorus. I was surprised it wasn't chosen as the second single, but it's inevitably going to make it to radio sooner or later. Many of these songs could.

Locked Out of Heaven is an instant classic. The funky chords and melodies here instantly remind one of Sting (who sang this record with Bruno at the grammys by the way...fit him like a glove), and in spite of cheeky lyrics like "your sex takes me to paradise", the record proves to be an anthem.

Gorilla is another unabashed sex anthem. Quite catchy and raw in it's vocal delivery.

Treasure is pure funk heaven. I hope this gets a single release too. Radio needs something like this. My only nitpick on this song is that I sort of wish there were some female background vocals.

Moonshine wasn't a favorite of mine. It was ok, and will probably grow on me eventually, but I thought using the same exact drums from "treasure" was a weak production decision.

When I Was Your Man is such an emotive piano ballad. It's really growing on me every time I replay it. A true highlight here, and another classic in the making.

Natalie. This one is growing on me. The production seems to overshadow the lyrics and the concept for me, but it's alright.

Show Me. This one seems a bit under produced in areas, but is a great reggae tune...far superior to the Damian Marley duet from his debut! Would be nice to see this make the radio playlists also.

Money Make Her Smile. Bruno's first heavy hitting hip hop record goes IN! Love the production here. And the song has so much attitude. Love rocking out to this.

If I Knew & Old & Crazy seem like demos that were left on the cutting floor. They are just barely 2 minutes each and though they sound good, they're just way too short for me.

This album is really fun, but it's quite short and doesn't ever seem to come full circle due to that length. If you like soul and pop of the present day or the past decades, you'll enjoy this. Give it a shot!
