Rock Steady Gems in this plain package

Nothing can detract from the sublime harmonies produced by the great Duke Reid, and its always good to find an elusive recording made available on CD. "Tribute to Peckings" is a welcome opportunity to obtain otherwise impossible to find tracks, although presented in a very basic "expense spared" package. Entirely monochrome, the slick and liner notes are reprinted, spelling mistakes and all, unaltered from the original LP issue, music content also identical. Jamaican music collectors will of course be used to pops and crackles in their vinyl collection, but with the audio processing software now available it should not have been necessary to master the CD (presumably) directly from a noisy LP. Having said that, the majority of the tracks are of acceptable quality and its worth putting up with surface noise to savour an alternative version of "You have caught me" by the Techniques, and the Supersonics "1-2-3 kick" - another hard-to-find gem.Read full review...
