My Listen: Who Else! by Jeff Beck
I love not being able to judge a book by its cover.
Because if you knew absolutely nothing about Jeff Beck, and someone handed this cd to you to play, there wouldn't be a clue from the cover art to let you in on the musical ride that you "might have been" expecting.
Sure, there's a shot of Jeff on the cover with his axe...on the back, there's a shot of Jeff taking some shuteye in a diner...and on the inside fold-out, there's a very homey shot of Jeff with his pet bulldog.
You could get the idea that Jeff is a salt-of-the-earth sort of rocker, perhaps. And that, of course, would be true...up to a point.
Right off the bat, "What Mama Said" grabs you by the neck and throws you into a speeding car; quirky and frenetic, it flows almost seamlessly into the next track, "Psycho-Sam." By now, there's no point in trying to unlock the door to escape...but if you like growling, spacey guitar riffs, you won't want to, anyway.
Suddenly, you arrive at your destination: a beautiful live track of Jeff and friends, playing "Brush With the Blues." Melancholy and gripping, it's the softness and clarity of Jeff's playing that really gets to you. I know that for me, this song has staying power...for keeps.
And if my science hero, Carl Sagan, had lived to make a second, updated "Cosmos," I know he would've sampled from "Blast From the East," "Angel (Footsteps)," "THX138" and "Space For the Papa," for the soundtrack. The latter-most, especially, starts out so ethereal and fragile that you really do feel lost and abandoned amongst the stars; then, things get heavy with some synth industrial overtones, all sandwiched together by some of Jeff's most molten and relentless riffs. Perfect ear candy, if you like sci-fi spice on your musical gems.
I could go on and on about the rest of the tracks, too, but that would be putting out spoilers. Just know that this piece of work goes great with any road trip...and the planetarium, as well!Read full review...
Who Else
This is Jeff Beck some original material in the 21st century I didn't like it as well as his classic stuff from the late seventies but it has a more modern sound it's still a good listen.

Jeff Beck Who Else!
What can I say about Jeff Becks' guitar playing other than, EXPLOSIVE! This album tests the boundaries of electric rock and synthesized guitar playing. This is primarily a instrumental album (much like most of becks solo work). There is a exciting feel to this up-tempo modern rock album. Becks' proficient playing works perfectly with the musicians he assembled for this album. Who Else! Proves Beck has still got it and is a perfect album for any fan of, new wave, experimental or preogressive rock.Read full review...

Jeff Beck has been doing a ''fantstic'' job of guitar playin' since ... forever. From THE JEFF BECK GROUP till now, he has created a great, unique sound. This is no different.Take some time to be amazed. I love his style. A TRUE GUITAR HERO.Read full review...
