Requires a server to store videos
This camera requires an app that limits its functionality without paying extra. Their subscription only records 7 days of motion detection. Without a server, the camera will only record 30 seconds and then shut down for 10 minutes. It won't even record locally on the SD card.
Free features:
- 1080p live feed over the internet
- Infrared night vision
- Alerts for motion and sound detection
- Connect with a smartphone
Cons:
- No backup battery
- Requires stable internet and server
- Bloated software limited without YI server subscription
- The "Kami Cloud" service is also very limited and not worth the reoccurring cost (in my opinion)
Subscription workaround:
Making your own server is easier than you'd think. With the use of free screen capture software, you can record any stream including the camera's live feed. Any old computer with work (just have to keep it on) and a 256GB hard drive will store over a month of 24/7 hd video.
Suggestions:
- No internet or unstable connections? Get a webcam instead.
- Willing to pay for server subscription? There's a trial if you buy the camera directly from their website, but shop around and do research on different brands. YI hardware is a great deal but the reoccurring fees are expensive compared to the competition. Account for cost, storage space, reliability, and reputation. If your estimated cost exceeds $15/month, drop the tech companies altogether and start shopping for professional security and monitoring systems.
Should I buy this product?
- YES but only if you set up an old computer with it. The night vision feature and quality of the image makes it worth the cost.
- NO if don't want to set up a computer because then it is basically useless.
