a very fun but flawed game

a fantastic game. very very hard though. the story is acceptable but not much else. it's par for the course for early ys games very simple as bare but enough to keep the game moving. the characters are mostly forgettable but these early ys games are all about one thing. the combat. the combat here is much different then most ys games in that it's a side scroller. it's very difficult. very. unless you're max leveled you really don't stand a chance towards the end and even so there's definitely a little luck involved. no it's not like dark souls. knock it off. but there's definitely a learning curve with most bosses. if you don't know the patterns and how to avoid them you will die. for sure. thankfully once you reach the 2nd area you can max your level fairly easily (there's a part where birds infinitely spawn. walk into that room, hold down the up button and hold the attack button. this is a super easy way to grind experience and money.) it's a shame that this is so necessary though because most of the enemies demand tons of grinding. if you're not a certain level you really have no chance of beating them. this bird grinding method makes it play a little more how it should have been. a really fun but challenging platformer. the game is super short (if you know what you're doing and do the bird method i've known people who beat it in less than 5 hrs.) with an average playtime of 8hrs-10 but it's definitely worth it. as a huge ys fan i loved this game. i definitely recommend it but you have to be ok with hard games. if you play more to relax after a hard day of work watch a let's play on youtube because as much as i love this game you will not enjoy it. Fun but unbalanced game

The graphics are overall very good. The story and dialogue is OK but unremarkable. My main complaint is the gameplay. Player movement and attacking is very fast. This is at odds with the fact that if you rush, you will die quickly. You must proceed slowly and deliberately at first and grind out experience. After a few levels are gained and better gear attained, you can run through the levels holding the attack button down to chop through anything in your path. Most bosses can be easily dealt with by using the power ring and finding the right spot to stand as you swing away. Oddly, there is a max of 16 experience levels. Once you get to the castle, your level becomes irrelevant and you must rely on enemy avoidance to make it to the end of this long area, which also has background statues capable of killing you in two hits, even with the best armor. At this point I became so frustrated I resorted to blatant "save scumming". There is challenge, but the game is hurt by bad design choices.Read full review...

Challenging old school action-adventure-rpg

This game plays a lot like Zelda II for the NES; its a side-scrolling action adventure game with rpg overtones. Your character gains levels as you cut through endless enemies inhabiting fairly linear side-scrolling levels. You can return to the village to upgrade your weapons and armor, while spending your gold on other items like healing herbs. Overall, the game looks basic, but colorful and has one of the best soundtracks on the Super Nintendo. The game play is very basic as well since you pretty much just run from left to right swinging your sword constantly. Boss battles can become very frustrating and you will most likely spend a lot of time leveling up beforehand. The ability to save your game at any point is very handy though. Ys III is worth playing, if only because its one of the few Falcom games to make it to the US (even if this port was actually handled by another company). Its a piece of gaming history that can be both challenging and frustrating, but hey the soundtrack is awesome.Read full review...

For the RPG Gamer: Ys III Edition

I purchased Ys III game for the SNES, which I solely bought because I am a fan of the series and remember how much fun I had playing the SEGA GENESIS version of this fine game. The music, graphics, and gameplay are excellent! The controls are easy to learn and all that means is that the replay value is high.
In my opinion, this game ranks high with other related genre titles, including: The Legend of Zelda series, and Final Fantasy. The time spent in this game is no where near that of Final Fantasy, but it is close to The Legend of Zelda around 20 hours to complete the game with everything.
I recommend picking up this game for either SNES, SEGA GENESIS, TURBO GRAFX/TURBO DUO, or PLAYSTATION 2 (IMPORT). Thank you for reading this review!

Great game!

I haven't played this game in a long time since I was little, I decided to buy it because I never had a chance to really finish the game but all in all I thought it was a good game for its time. It has good graphics and it presents the player with a challenge, guess that's why I never beat it. I suppose I'll find out if I can beat this game when it arrives at my house in a few days. This game kind of reminds of other role playing games that I have played but it will never beat or compare to my favorite series which is the Final Fantasies but it's still a great game.Read full review...

nice game

Evil is on the verge of taking over the enchanted land of Ys. You must battle bloodthirsty monsters to save the land. As luck would have it, you can employ 25 types of swords, armors, and rings. When the going gets tough, magical items can aid you in your quests. As the game progresses, cinematic sequences reveal the plot, and a stereo soundtrack accentuates the action. Feel free to take a break at any time since the battery backup feature allows the game to be saved at any time. Protect the land, and vanquish evil in YS: Wanderers from Ys III.Read full review...
